There is a huge difference. The maft is intended to adjust fuel trims and to let you use a GM maf instead of the stock one. DSMLink does fuel trims, timing tables, fuel tables, speed density capability, custom pin inputs, and much much more. Too much to sit here and individually list everything. The maft will get your air/fuel ratio to the point where you can drive around but it is not thorough enough to be a long term solution or fine tune a car, especially once you start doing major modifications or raising boost.

Find a competent tuner in your area that is familiar with tuning evos. A lot of evo guys use ecuflash to tune and evoscan to log their cars with excellent results. Why wouldn't DSMs be able to do the same? All you are missing is a tactrix 2.0 cable and evoscan, and you are ready to begin tuning. You wouldn't have to do anything to your car other than adding a pin to your ecu. "Doing it right the first time" would mean getting a good tune from a reputable shop that knows what they're doing.

I have an ecu out of my 97 gsx auto i was going to use if i decided to use link im leaning more towards link i think because i feel like i can better monitor my car and more accurate tune with the link how much would it cost to get link for everything needed? I also have a new AEM UEGO im going to attempt to install not to good at wiring does anyone know of any good threads or videos that would help me hook the guage up on my 99 gsx? Thanks for the responses everyone!

AEM doesn't always play nice with link. You are better off with an LC-1 or LC-2 from innovate. People have made them work but it can be troublesome.
