1999 GST Update #1

Spun a bearing in the original 7 bolt a little over a year ago and the car has been sitting waiting for me to get the motivation to redo the engine bay. Been slowly ordering parts to rebuild the engine in my garage while the block and head get checked out at the machine shop, new SS valves, bronze valve guides, balance shaft elimination and forged rotating assembly if I’m feeling up to the task.

Well just last week in my area a full 2g AWD swap came up for sale, trans, t-case, driveshaft, rear differential, fuel tank with sending units, subframe bolts, the works. Figured now is a better time than ever to fully restore this thing and bring it back with AWD. With over 260k miles, it wasnt going to be a minor restoration job.

The gas tank debris shield had certainly seen better days. A small amount of time and effort and she’ll be good for another 20 years.

Now to start disassembling that crusty rear subframe assembly. Almost every bolt had to be cut out, miraculously one set of LCA eccentric bolts managed to break free but the other side wasn’t so easy.

Every part was removed, degreased, rust wire wheeled and surface roughed up before laying a coat of Rustoleum rust reformer and a final coat of clear for some added protection. Not Mecum quality work but I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing i threw this in my GST without touching it up first.

Now just waiting on my sway bar end links and new ball joints for this thing to get reassembled in update #2.
