Ok I'm hoping you guys can help me I'm running out of ideas and only have til this friday to pass emission before my temp plate expires. I recently did an engine swap on my RS to fix a grenaded piston in hole 1. The car was running great no check engine light after the swap took it for a road test and all was still fine. The day I registered it the fuel pump went. So I picked up a fuel pump from a local junkyard/parts shop called Mark's auto. I believe the paperwork said it was out of 1996 RS (I'm not 100% on this the paperwork is in my trunk I could check in the morning to be sure) after doing some searching on parts web pages 95-99 seems to have the same fuel pump so I grabbed it. When I got home I swapped out the fuel tank due to an excess of varnish build up on the bottom of the tank so I didn't want it getting sucked up any more then it already had on the 1/2 mile road test. When I dropped the module in the new tank I noticed the module's fuel line fitting didn't spin and on mine it does as the bigger nut on the fuel line doesn't spin on my car so I swapped the pump off the module and put it on my module and dropped it back in the tank. All was well it seemed the fuel pump primed ok. I started the car up it was idling real rough up and down and threw a check engine light with error codes 300 and 301 for a misfire in hole 1. I did the plugs in the car with the recommended NGK plugs gapped out to .050. I tested the pack which has tolerances of 11.5K-13.5K ohms 1/4 tower was at 12.04K ohms and 2/3 tower was at 11.82K ohms. I checked the wires which have a max resistance of 8K ohms according to the service manual. 1 - 4.15K / 2 - 2.81K / 3 - 3.05K / 4 - 4.16K.

I pulled the IAC and cleaned it out since it was covered in crap. I pulled the MAP and cleaned that out. Pulled the throttle body and cleaned out the port for the IAC and the butterfly since it was covered in gunk. Forgot to clean up the port the MAP goes in to by mistake. Tried to wipe out the plenum some as it was a little dirty inside it but I could only reach so far and I didn't want to just spray loads of brake cleaner down the plenum and have it get sucked in the cylinders cause I wasn't sure if that would be safe for the engine. I searched the intake up and down for a MAF but there wasn't one before the throttle body. Found a sensor on the back middle of the plenum that sticks out in to the plenum just after the throttle body could this be the MAF? I pulled the fuel rail off the plenum and cleaned out the fuel rail there was a little bit of gunk build up in the fuel rail but not much but I cleaned it regardless since I had it out. I picked up injector o rings and pulled all four injectors and cleaned them also. Filled them with cleaner and pulsed them off a 12V battery to make sure they were spraying ok all four injectors seemed to spray ok. Put everything back together all seemed well for about 5-10 mins then the check engine light came back on for a 300 and 301 again and she started idling rough. However now the engine no longer feels sluggish anymore and doesn't feel like it is misfiring anymore but the code is still up and when I come to a dead stop sometimes the car will idle ok at 800ish and not jump. Then other times when I come to a stop she will jump from 200-900/1000 RPM's. I haven't changed the fuel filter out yet I was going to try that tomorrow afternoon since the car sat for 11 years before I restored it. The only other thing I can think of that changed since the initial test drive is a small exhaust leak popped up after the cat right at the bend to go over the rear axle.

I'm hoping maybe someone will read this who has run in to a similar problem and can help me fix it cause as I've said I only have til this friday to pass emissions to get my hard plates. This is driving me nuts please any ideas would be a HUGE help I really need my car.

My guess is if you didn't find the mas right behind the air filter, then your problem might be a upgraded way of reading the air entering the engine. That would be my guess. Another thing if that's fine would be your tps sensor. That affects idle if its not properly working....and that's all I've got.

Thanks wolf I checked the TPS with the multimeter this morning and the thing is out of range and won't even register on 1/3. Then on 2/3 when I open the throttlebody it is not a smooth increase like it should be it went 751 1506 out of range. So I picked up a new TPS it should be here in the morning carquest had to ship it in from NY. I did some digging through the manual and I guess the 420a doesn't have a MAF that sensor is the Intake Air Temp sensor. Hopefully the TPS solves the rough idle and random misfire issues.

Well not the TPS. Does anyone know if the ignition packs tower resistances are within tolerances could it still be misfiring due to lack of spark on only one tower?
