1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse 5spd Manual 2.0 ltr non turbo that will not go into gear while running but when the car is shut off..Can anyone tell you why it does this?

perhaps your clutch is shot or you have an issue with your hydr. clutch lines? maybe not totaly sure. but it wouldnt hurt to check that stuff!

Q: just start to happen, like out of the blue?

First check to make sure you have fluid in your clutch reservoir. It might be combined with the brake master cylinder...some cars are. If that's full or has some in it, fill it and try again. If it still won't go into gear, then you'll need to bleed the system/have it bled. If after successfully bleeding the system it still doesn't work, then you most likely have a bad slave or master cylinder. It's best to replace them in pairs as the newness of whichever component was replaced, will typically shorten the life of the old one.

check to make sure the arm on the slave cylinder ISNT moving before you start replacing hydraulic parts. if it is moving then you have a clutch problem.

OK; so we bled the system and the clutch became stiffer! With the car off; it would shift much easier into gear, but still would not shift into gear when the car was running!

What do we try next?
