I have a question. We just bought a 1995 tsi awd and we have to replace the head. The previous owner broke the timing belt and bent all but two valves and cracked the valve guides. How long does the 4g63 engine last? I'm willing to average your mileage out that you have on yours our had on yours before you had to replace the engine. We have 167k miles on it. Also, we have a 1991 eagle talon tsi awd that we got from a friend and were wondering if we could put the head from it onto our talon without any major modifications. Thanks in advance. :)

Also I've been searching for days trying to find the answer to my questions and can't seem to find anything. This is my last resort. Please help. :)

Regarding your head swap question, you obviously didn't search AT ALL.

These engines last a long time if taken care of half decently. I've never really felt that miles means anything, it's all about how those miles were put on and how it was taken care of.

Change your timing belt every 50,000 just to be on the safe side. Also inspect your timing belt somewhat regularly to ensure there are no teeth missing, worn down, and cracks in/on the timing belt. As far as swaping the engine thats not my department :/

Edit: now that i think about it, if its the SAME motor it should line up correctly. In the 2G, the only part i could think of is the fact that the 1G does not have a crank position sensor, so you might have to figure out how you can get that to coincide.

Thank you for the help and I have been searching for days and could not find anything. We dont want to spend 500 on a new head if the bottom end is going to go out. I just would like an average of how long a dsm engine will run. the person we bought the car from knew nothing about cars. Any major thing done to the car was taken to a dealer, which is a safe thing for those who dont know what they are doing. Thank you for getting the urls for me.

Edit: There is 167k miles on the motor.

Puting a 1g head on a 2g is simple,it just requires some diffrent parts.you will have to change the intake manifold because the 1g intake manifold has bigger ports than the 2g manifold does.if you use a 1g head with a 2g manifold it will cause performance issues...the head stud holes are also a diffrent size.when I put a 2g head on my buddies 1g block I had to make the head stud holes bigger so the arps would slide into the holes, also we put an evo 3 manifold on the 2g head, then I bolted up the cas sensor to the side of the head...

Longevity is based on how well the car was taken care of. If you are uncertain, then freshen it up. You can always check the tolerances and bearings and such to see if there's any signs of abnormal wear.

From being on here have seen some dsms last less than 100 miles (on a rebuild), some last well over 200,000 miles.

193,564 miles is when its gonna blow up

sarcasm aside we cant tell you when the bottom end will go. But to make sure it doesn't why don't you have it rebuilt? its cheaper to do it when you have it apart then have it go and take out your new head. just a thought though.

You can usually get a new 2g head pretty cheap and it will bolt right on. And you definitely didn't search for days. Be honest you probably searched for 15mins. Found this site made two searches and became a member then asked this.

I agree with deadly Scone for sure, im gonna change all my belts pulleys and tensioners at 40,000 just to be sure everything is good to go, you can get a brand new rebuilt head for like $300 maybe $400 shipped
