After a year of tripping over it in my garage.. I've finally installed my '92 ShepRacing tranny in my 1990 with a couple notes to anyone duplicating this:
1.) Early 1992 Trannys are 22-spline so can use with your OEM 1990 X-fer case (this explains my difficulty in trying to put a 23-spline case in
).
2.) Transmission arms are different on 1991-1994 trannys vs 1990s (duh).
The one arm can be unbolted / replaced with the 1990 one. The other is internally mounted so need a different method.
Remedy is to either change to a 1991-1994 shifter, cables, brackets.. or do what I did.
I measured the 1990's location of the shifter arm's cable mount in relation to the pivot point. I then drilled/tapped for a 5/16" cap bolt the same location on the 1992 shifter arm. I threaded the bolt thru the cable eye and enough washers to take up the gap while giving the cable room to move a little.
There is a good VFAQ on the above (for the "short Shift Mod")HERE
Also as a general note.. make sure all alignment dowels on the engine block, transmission and transfer case are in place before installation of a new Transmission / X-fer case.
In my case a dowel came out of my old tranny sticking in the X-Fer case. So when I tried to re-install on my new tranny.. the dowel interfeared with the existing dowel in the tranny (another duh).
