Just bought a 1991 talon tsi. Looks like the car has been slightly modded but from what I can tell it's just a front mount intercooler, intake, and exhaust. Car drove fine until overheating when I brought it in for Colorado emmisona testing. Now car drives ok until 3,000 / 4,000 Rpms and then bogs when turbo spools up. This is my first turbo and really could use some help diagnosing the problem. Is there any dsm guys in or around Denver that could help me out for some $$ or can anyone recommend a good shop in the area?? Just moved here a few weeks ago and don't know the area..please help!!

Car is back on the road! Big thanks to the guys at Import Sport Performance Shop for fixing the massive boost leak! Go see them if you're in the Denver area and need anything done!!
Take the intake tube off of the turbo and check it (the turbo shaft) for in/out and up/down play to see if it is having any issues. Having one of these cars means you get to learn and do some things (or everything) yourself so that is a easy thing for a first timer to do to start with. Does it loose any coolant when you drive it now after it overheated? Check your coolant level for this. If it is full then good deal, if not, possible you have some other problems but lets not get horse before the cart. Check those and if possible post a picture or two of the engine bay for us to see. A close up of the turbo is always nice so we can see what you have under that hood. The folks on here are very helpful as long as you are willing to help yourself also. Just start new threads with new issues so they can be dealt with separately and by someone who has had a similar experience. Welcome to the forum, it's a great community of knowledgeable people and we all share similar interests! :)

In addition bad spark plug wires can cause these symptoms, microcracks are difficult to diagnose, so just replace them if it's been a while. Also check that all the vaccum tubes are hooked up and not hanging free especially around the turbo and air intake sections.

Thank you all for the replies....I'm thinking its a boost leak but still not sure. Coolant hasn't leaked at all since overheating and couldn't find any lose or hanging hoses in my inspection.

That coupler holding the intake pipe on looks a little fishy. Make sure its not leaking and makes a good seal. Also while youre at it turn that boost controller all the way down. Do u have an aftermarket boost gauge To know much boost your pushing?
 
Tried turning down boost controller but it seems to be all the way down already or I just might be doing it wrong. Found these unplugged wires and not sure what they are or where they go(see pic). Any ideas?!?!

The top circled connector goes to the wire coming off of the overflow tank and that is surely not your Mass Air Flow sensor connector at the bottom? Is the MAF connected with wires, it sure looks suspicious.

Mine smells like fuel. Bout to get the oil changed but need to know the cause. When I bought the car it was running super rich and hitting fuel cut. 97 spyder gst
You should hook up a scanner with data stream and check you fuel trims long and short. If they are over 6-8% negative its using too much and vise versa if they are positive
