I have a 1990 Laser that I need to replace the fwd 5 speed tranny in. I have found a fwd 5 speed out of a 1991 eclipse. Are there any differences in the 1990 and '91 trannies???? Thank You for Your help.

no..there are no differences at all. :thumb:

Yes there are. The levers on the tranny are different lengths. The bracket on the trans that holds the cables are different and the shift lever in the car is different.

You will need to change the shift lever, cables and the bracket on the trans to a 91 vintage to match the 91 trans.

Thats a bit backwards. If you car is a 90 then the shifter (in car), cables, bracket that holds cables to tranny, and shift levers are all 90 only items. If you have a 91 tranny then you will need to switch the levers and the bracket that holds the cable from your 90 tranny to the 91. Then it should work.

The other option is to get the shiter (in car), cables, and bracket for the cable and convert your car to the 91 and later style. Good luck.

Reread his post. Reread my post. You restated exactly what I first said.

Did you say the same thing twice?

If he has a 91 trans then they already match becasue they are 91. He needs them to be 90 to fit the 90 shifter and cables.

What I said was he can change the tranny to 90 parts. Or change the car to 91 parts. His choice. :thumb:

I don't appreciate the sarcasm in your post. At least not today. Like I said, reread his post:

ie, He owns a 90 Laser. He has a 91 replacment tranny. Hmm, what did I post, let's look:

Step back......he asked what is different going to a 91 setup. ^^^^ Look what I stated is different and look what I told him needed changed.

Uh, no. If it's a 91 trans then they don't match. Like he stated, it's a 90 car.

You can't change the tranny to 90 parts and have it work unless you tear the tranny down and change the selector arm shaft. And yes he needs to change to 91 parts for it to work.

I know what you posted, but who calls there shifter a lever. There are three levers in that system and being specific would be a great help to us all. I specified if it was the levers on the tranny or in the car.

Uh, no. If it's a 91 trans then they don't match. Like he stated, it's a 90 car

I know what he said. He can, if you like it or not, change the levers (on the tranny) to a 90 size along with the cable bracket and it will work. I know what car he has I have the same one in my drive way.

You can't change the tranny to 90 parts and have it work unless you tear the tranny down and change the selector arm shaft. And yes he needs to change to 91 parts for it to work.

You are quite asstute, I said that in my post that he can change the lever (on the tranny) to a 90 style and it will work. Nice condradiction in your own post, but I am guessing that is becasue you are still dealing with my sarcasm. So doesn he need the 91 parts or can he change the levers (on the tranny) to a 90. You said he can do the first, but then you said that only the second will work.

Again, they will both work he has a choice. Changing to 91 parts, if he can find them, will be less of a hassle, but they will both work.

Well, I guess you know someone who does call the shifter a lever now. After all, it consists of three to make it work. I work in the auto industry and we have names for parts that the laymen doesn't use. Maybe it would be helpful on your part if you poised the question to me, on which 'lever' I was talking about, instead of being a jerk about it.

Name one person on here that has changed the crossover input lever on a 91 trans to a 90 style? Afterall, apparently it's a pretty common mod. Tearing the tranny down is like changing plugs.

You get my point. People don't change the input lever on the trans. You make it sound like it's a cakewalk to change the lever on the tranny. Have you ever swapped a 91 trans into a 90 car or vice-versa? I've done the swap from a 90 to 91 trans on three 90 cars, 2 GSX's and a GGSX. And one 91GS from a 91 to 90 trans.

If he asked for mods for more torque, would you recommend putting a V6 in his car? Or modding his stock engine?

Nice. You're a piece of work

Thanks. What am I supposed to do, call you up or PM you and ask how you are feeling and what type of response I am "allowed" to give. Doubt it. i am sorry you had a bad day, but if you take everything on the internet to heart your life will be one filled with missery and dispear.

You seem to assume alot and you know what that does. You dont know my history in cars or what I do for fun so dont give me that laymen horse shit. I know about levers and the different classes and how they work. I wasnt here to ask you questions. I was helping this kid with his tranny problem.

Name one person on here that has changed the crossover input lever on a 91 trans to a 90 style? Afterall, apparently it's a pretty common mod. Tearing the tranny down is like changing plugs.

There are a few locals here in AZ that have done it. When did I say it was common or easy. Again you assume and it seems to affect you in a negative light. To some I bet it is easy. To others not so much. Try to not act like you know what everyone is think and that they know what you are thinking.

I never said it was a cake walk. quote me saying that and I will paypal you 5 bones. I gave him options. Some people dont mind being sheep and following what other tell them, but some like to have options. I like to give people all the options I know of even if they are a bit harder, becasue I dont know there level of mechanical skill. For all we know he works at a tranny shop and can have it switched in 30 minutes, btu with all you knowledge you knew he didnt.

No i havent done the swap myself. I bought an extra 90 tranny becasue I work smart not hard. If you buy the right pieces in the first place then you dont have to worry about compatibilty later on.

If he asked for mods for more torque, would you recommend putting a V6 in his car? Or modding his stock engine?

Again, I work smart not hard. So becasue I posted options, one of them being harder than the other, I tell everyone the hardest way to do things. Nice logic. i would think that an engineer would have a better thought process than that. I, my self would go with a 500 cube Caddy motor for the most torque.

No, my mailbox is full. :p But you could be a little more professional about it, lose the sarcasm and simply say, 'hey were you talking about the shifter in the car when you spoke about it? then...., not make a sarcastic post as if I don't know WTH I was talking about.

Your comment on who calls it a shift lever was only further sarcasm. Who's the one that made the first assumption? I was simply pointing out... 'you know someone who calls it a shift lever now.' Isn't' that what I said? That 'Someone' would be me.
John Q Public would have been a better term than laymen.

Again, my point with my last question with looking for more torque. So, somebody makes that post and you're going to suggest two options, one..... to put a caddy motor in, the other to mod the stock engine? Making such a far out suggestion.... to change that lever.... is a good option?

If you had, then you wouldn't be posing the option to change the lever. Just as..... You likely wouldn't advise someone to put a caddy motor in the car if you'd actually done it. Given the amount of work necessary.

You just don't see it. The suggestion to change the lever on the trans is really a far out suggestion. Who's going to do it? Like looking for more torque out of the motor? Suggesting putting a V6 or V8 in it would be viable and good advice to spread? Isn't that a far out suggestion? You probably wouldn't offer up that option and neither would I.

will you two quit fighting ahelp help the guy? I would help but I dont know, but whats the point of asking for help if all your going to get is two people figting over something.

Oh man. The question has been answered in the first two post, good reading.

You are getting huffy over a smiley face. Get over it.

I had three people read you thread and they all thought you were talking about the levers (on tranny) not the shifter, so I made the comment. I think you are missing the point. The Cadillac was more sarcasm. I would never tell anyone to put a Caddy motor in a DSM. You are taking it to the extreme to make a point that makes no sense. Most people do what I did and buy a 90 tranny becasue they know they are a bi*** to find parts for. Being an engineer I would think that you would embrace the fact that someone would do something new or try a different way. Isnt that what they ask you do all the time at work, or do you just tell them its to hard and give up. If you still work there I would imagine you find a new way. A 90 TB is a PIA to swap but I will let people know that it can be done. That is completely different that telling someone to put a Caddy motor in a DSM. You obviuosly have a reading comprehension problem. You keep saything that I "tell" people or "advise them. I have done neither. All I did was tell him his options. It is up to him to decide what method is best and the 5 dollar challenge still stands. Also, by you thinking if it is hard for me I should tell someone else not to do it, thats BS. Tunning is hard for some, but they dont say not to tune becasue of it. Like I posted before, some people have different skill levels in different areas and that is for them to decide. If they dont know all the options then they may go about the harder way becasue of lack of knowledge. This may not be that situation, but I am not going to assume, like some, but I will give what I know.

For the last time.

I NEVER TOLD HIM THAT IS THE ONLY WAY OR EASIEST WAY, NOR DID I SUGGEST HIM DO IT THAT WAY.

I gave him an option for him to decide if he wants to do it. I am through kicking this dead horse and trying to re-explain my post to you. Have a good day.

Will the brackets and levers off of the 1991 Talon Awd be the same as on the 91 fwd tranny. Oh, I'm so confused after trying to read this thread. I can either change some brackets?? from my existing 90 tranny to the 1991 to make it work, or I can change the linkage from a 1991 car to my 90 car to make it work..... Correct????!!??? I just want a quick and easy swap. If there is not a quick and easy swap, please let me know. And this is off of the subject, but will brake calipers and rotors off of the the same 1991 awd talon work on my 90 fwd laser turbo????? Thanks again guys. I appreciate it. Later

Take the shifter (incar), cables, and bracket (on tranny) from the 91-94 and put them in your car. That will be faster then the other method.

The other stuff shoud fit fine, but it may end up being that 90 only crap that happens. As far as I have seen they should fit.
