i was heading out to my mechanic to ask him to change my fluid since i bought the car not to long ago and wasnt sure

he tells me i dont need to change it that manual tranny fluids are in there for life

is this true or false :dsm:

EXTREMLY FALSE

Recomended you change it every 60k miles..............................What did he tell you abouy synthetic? It being the same as reg motor oil? OMG NOT TRUE EITHER

sure it lasts the life of the tranny, that is about 60k miles LOL. sounds like something my dad would say. but that shit like every other damn fluid can and will break down, get air in it, burn, or w/e. its only $30 for good fluid, and u can do it urself, pretty easily. do it.

I just changed mine last night. It's easy as hell, don't pay your mechanic to do it. I ended up using GM syncromesh since no one around here carries the pennzoil version. The old oil that came out was black and cruddy. This stuff was nice and clear. It immediately made a noticible difference in shift quality. I'd reccomend it to anyone.

Yep u can go to a chevy/gm dealer and go to parts and ask for gm syncromesh, 10 bux a quart, u need 2.5 for the tranny. You can also order BG Syncroshift from some of the dsm sites, they got a new one out, the syncroshift 2, i think its a better synthetic, thats probably the best stuff u could get. Iuse the stuff from gm and i had mobil1 in from previous owner and it was a definatley a wet dream difference as Defiant says. Standard gear oil is GL5 and is corrosive to our synchros, syncromesh and syncroshift are GL4 which is what it needs.

well i took it to mobil 1 they flushed out the tranny and added synthetic

they told me i came in time my tranny had water (i live in florida hurricane season and floods) i saw it with my own eyes it was a mixture of gear fluid and water :shhh:

Damn hurricanes. Sounds like they've been giving alot of DSM's hell. I run BG Syncroshift in my tranny. I also change it every 6K miles (once per summer). :dsm:

I run Pennzoil Syncromesh. There was no noticable difference shifting wise going from BG Syncroshift 2. Just alot cheaper and more easy to get ahold of.
I recommend changing fluid every 6000k miles or every other motor oil change.

If you have an NT, I believe the manual lists a specific fluid. I think it's Texaco MTX fluid FM....

Also, I think I read somewhere that you're supposed to replace the tranny fluid every 30,000 miles.

The milage to change fluid depends on how hard you beat the hell out of it. If you don't dragrace and or speed shift by anymeans than sure 30,000k would be ok. Otherwise it wouldn't be a bad idea to change fluid a bit earlier. Especially with a bone stock, never been modified transmission.

I just remember reading the 30,000 mile figure somewhere. I'm guessing everyone on this board falls under the "severe duty" category anyway, in which case you're supposed to do more intense maintenance. Of course that's when the car is actually running :D

im not to sure if this is accurate or not but i had a few fellow dsmers and a few mechanics tell me that sum lucis a/t lube and sum regular atf fluid does just fine, they said because it stays thick and doesnt breakdown much, keep everything fully lubed

im running bg synchroshift 2 right now and it sucks ass !!!!!!! shifts fine when cruising, racing, it shifts more violently then my cousin with terrets syndrome.

im switching to penzoilsynchromesh and im gonna try and add in a friction modifier. has anyone ever used friction modifer in their dsm tranny?

So what times DO you have problems with it? If it's ok when cruising and racing then what is the issue?

i said ti shifts fine cruising but violently when racing, meaning it takes me too long during shifts when racing to get into the next gear. synchros are spiinnning too fast im guessing. a heavier gear oil or regular old synchromesh with a friction modifier should stop that or at least make it a bit easier shifting at 7400 rpm's :|

Rule of thumb is thinner oil cools the syncro more for better shifts, but doesn't give the best protection for the gears. Thicker oil is great for protecting the gearsets but doesn't give good shift quality.
What do you mean as violent? Does it grind, crunch,or just don't want to go in ?

This is not true. John Shephard told me to never run Lucas through my tranny. It work exactly opposite of a friction modifier. It's thick and climbs good, but it takes away much of the needed friction, and it takes away shift quality in high RPM/High HP applications, like what green92gsx said.
