Waltham,
Hey, I have been on the board for a while but have not done anything huge to my car. I am going to get a new turbo and put it in myself and was just wondering what to get. I am getting the 16g turbo with porting. On the slowboyracing website there are all sorts of options but I am not sure what to get. Do I need the 7mm gasket and the ss oil line or is that just stuff to get to replace worn oem parts? I was going to just get the turbo until I looked at a vfaq which reccommended replacing certain bolts and such. Any help?

eh im right at your situation. i went with slowboyracing evo III b16G ported with flapper. i also got the SBR 2g install kit.. made the job a hell of a lot easier. some advise against getting the install kit [ they say its not worth it ] but i have no time to scavenge for 1g parts.

came with:
ss line
banjo bolt
washers
7cm gasket
o2 gasket
oil return gasket

and yes you need the 7cm gasket if you are planning to port the turbo. when installing i was scared shitless about cutting the lower oil line.. until i had the balls to and see if the SS oil line fully replaced the stock one.. which is does :thumb:

goodluck and make sure to pbblast/wd-40/liquid wrench all bolts 2-3 nights in advance :shhh:

I am leaning more towards just the ported 16g because it is tried and true and I don't want to get a fuel computer and injectors when I turn the boost up (I am planning to boost to about 16-18lbs). From what I have heard I can run the 16g with no problems, (I have a bigger fuel pump and that's it.)

I forgot to mention, my car is not a 2g, its a 1g so there is no need for the 2g install kit... does that change anyones advice?

the 16G is a proven turbo it has gone into 11's in AWD 1G's. It is by far the best bang for buck turbo for DSM. Just get new gaskets (head 2 mani; mani 2 turbo; turbo 2 o2; and o2 to dp) since your gaskets right now are 10+ years old

If you are upgrading from stock there is no reason not to get the Evo III 16G. It is just that much better than the other 16G's and is just cooler than sliced bread. I would get mine from FP with porting. Who ports the turbo makes a world of difference in terms of boost creep. A problem many have. Some have had trouble with SBR porting and boost creep. a 50$ port job is just that.

To recap: Get the Evo III 16G!!! :p

ShapeGSX has run some awesome times with the Evo, so it is a hot turbo. :shhh:

Wouldn't the EVO III cause me to end up getting a fuel computer and injectors though?

If you have full exhuast you better get the wastegate ported/34mm flapper or you won't see anything but 20+ psi at WOT.

Well right now I just have a ported 2g manifold, 2.5 inch downpipe and catback, I don't have a gutted cat or ported o2 housing. Will this make a difference? Should I port the o2 housing?... I am more confused now than at the beginning of this thread LOL.

Edit: Basically I am looking to keep it simple with a ported 16g... if I can have a simple setup with a Evo III let me know, I am looking to keep cost down too.

Can't I just run low boost with it though (like 14 or 15) and be ok though... I have an upgraded fuel pump. The car runs pretty rich right now at full boost.

note: gixrman, I'm not trying to argue with you or anything, I was just under the impression that a 16g can be dropped in without getting into injectors and fuel computers.

It'll drop right in without needing injectors or any tuning device. But, the most upgrade your going to get out of the turbo is in the tuning. With the turbo in with just an upgraded pump I would say you can get away with 16-17psi on 93 octane.

I have a palm pilot right now and am getting the program soon. Basically my deal is my car has been off the road since I went to college. I want to put a new turbo before I start driving again b/c my 14b has a lot of shaft play and has never been replaced. I just want the 16g in the car to carry me over until I can afford to upgrade the injectors and such and increase the boost. So long story short, I want to use the 16g at low boost instead of my 14b and when I get more money I will start tuning and increasing boost.

Boost maxes out fuel systems, not the turbo itself. An Evo III 16G at 15psi is going to be the same as a Big 16G. They shine at 20+psi of boost, where you will need fuel upgrades. Keep the boost low, then get fuel stuff. Not too tough. :thumb:
