hi im new to dsm i just got my first one 6 days ago

well i have been looking at upgrades already an i can see that i want a 16g turbo ...i have 2 questions

1. almost the entire car was redone 740 miles ago that includes trans engine rebuild complete w/je pistons turbo rebuild new cv joints new brakes new tires new timing set an new injectors ......my question is ...is it to soon to start upgrading further or should i let the engine break in for a while longer ,,,it already has a few bolt ons but i really want a 16g which brings me to my second question

2. is the 16g small turbo i have seen it called to much power for the stock internal components in my engine an will it greatly shorten the life of my cars engine ......sorry about the longwinded post but im excited an im afraid im gonna do something dumb an blow up my brand new engine

Get some 550cc injectors, some king of fuel management, and a better fuel pump, THEN the 16g. I run a 20g on completely stock internals.

Short answer:
Maybe

Long answer:
If you do not have at least 550cc injectors, DATALOGGER (most important!), boost gauge, and some kind of fuel management, it would be easy at 14+psi to go overly lean and pop the motor. I would suggest also getting an EGT, 3" mandrel bent turbo back, Evo 3 Exhaust Housing, Evo 3 o2 Housing, and a FMIC. With all of that and decent tuning you are still well within the safety limit of the stock motor. The stock 1g rods are good for ~450whp. People have gone mid 10s on the stock long block (bottom end, head, cams), to give you an idea.

Side note:
If you are looking at 16g turbos, you are shooting yourself in the foot if you do not get an Evo 3 16g. It flows more (than a big 16G), has quicker spool up (than a big 16G), and the exhaust housing is made of a lot higher quality metal than any other 16G. It is the way to go.

Other side note:
What model JE pistons are you using? They are generally not great for a daily driver car, as they expand and contract a good bit due to their metal compesition. This leads to what is called 'piston slap.'

Side Other Misc. Optional Note:

I run a "small" 16g with hardly any other modifications, stock fuel system, with no problems. I just keep the boost low. I only did this because my 14b broke though, if I had the money (which I do _now_) I would do what these other chuckle-hutts are saying, and do some other upgrades first.

ok thanks for the help so far guys ....i dont know what je pistons they are they were put in a month b4 i got the ccar .....for all i know the guy was lieing but he may not be cuz it has a few mods on it

well it looks like the 16g swap is a little more than i was wanting to go this is my daily driver an the motor has so few miles on it

i didnt wanna really put much more stress on it is why i said the 16g small turbo ..plus like i said i have had the car a week an its my first dsm so i dont even really know the available parts

ive just been getting to learn all the stuff that can be done

im gonna just get the bolt ons i wanted an stick with that for now

all i really wanted was 250 flywheel hp

i kinda wanted to get ti dynoed to see where im at now with the stuff thats done

well if anyone else has the opinion that the 16g small turbo is a no fuss no muss bolt on id like to hear ur point of view as well

read alot. No need to rush into things. Get all the bolt on you can, BUT dont just get somthing b/c its a bolt on, look ahead on what you want the car to do. if your end goal is 250hp then you really dont need to swap the turbo. If your goal changes make sure the parts you buy now could be acceptable to that change. Like dont get 2.5" exhuast get a full 3" system. It may not make a difference now but later down the road it might.

A evo 16g can be had for mid 500's. And a bolt on kit can be made for very little money or you can get a kit online for about what 100-200 bucks i think. BUt even with the turbo your not going to be able to jack the boost up and what not without supporting mods like injectors, fuel pump and fmic. And 250hp is nothing for this car, Like other people have said these engine can hold 400whp pretty easly. Just read up and educate yourself before you make any purchase, could save you trouble and money later on.

If you have a built engine why are you looking at a small ass 16g ? Go 20g or bigger imo.

Depending on how much boost youre going to run, check out the ADFX Racing smic. Its relatively inexpensive compared to the fmic setups. Theres plenty of information on upgrading also. Just to reiterate, make sure all your supporting mods are done FIRST. And if you change something, make sure you have a means of monitoring it. Proper tuning, monitoring and maintaining is an absolute must to being able to enjoy your dsm(and not have it off the road for 9 months like me!):thumbdown

ya thats why i asked i wanted to get thr right parts the first time .....an u know how moddin goes ill prolly want more power soon enough .....o btw im lookin through my recipts i got with this car ...6k wortnh btw an not over a month old an i see a steel head gasket is that normal or is that an upgrade an also i do have the fuel pump upgrade already i have a walboro 255lph

i will also agree to the datalogger and EvoIII16g turbo,

for the money it is the best performing turbo i have seen in its class, my roomate has one on his 97 GSt Spyder and its simply incredible, stock internals should be fine on moderate boost levels (14-16psi?) but when you start to crank it over 20 is when you nee to get scared IMO, bigger injectors (550's) and at least a Walbro 190 fuel pump should do the trick, add in an Apexi SAFC and you should be golden, good luck

First off welcome to the club, secondly you've been given some great advice here. That engine of yours is good for 450+ hp so a 16g is a hair dryer to it. You'll kick yourself later for not at least going with the EVOIII big 16g. Besides you can always run low boost if you're aprehensive about reliability. I have been running my EVOIII at 12psi but I cant wait to upgrade my fuel system and crank it up some more. Power is addictive so prepare for the rush.
