16g or 20g what to choose

Just throwing this out there, but have you considered a 18g?

I have a MHI 18g and the spool time is quick. Someone here mentioned their 16g hit full boost at 3000rpms.

My 18g pulls full boost at those rpms running 20psi. Its a neat turbo.

Spool of a 16g with the pull of a 20g :)

Okay so these cams are the BC 272 stage 2 cams..... Thanks for the link was a good place to start. I searched around for that link but couldn't find it. Kept getting the kelford ID cams thread. Thanks again...

I have thought about it but why go out and get a different turbo when I have both of these here already. So not really wanting to go buy a different turbo at this time....

It is all good... Thanks for all who have help with making up my mind... Deff know witch way I am going to go, now I have to fig out if I want to use this head off the other car... After pulling it off I see it has been ported and has the full valve train with the BC stage 2s.....

The 18g flows 590 cfm that's not terribly more than the e316g. It's been proven on a number of occasions with the right combination of parts a 16g can make stupid amounts of power. I would go with that personally.

16g flows 505CFM
18g flows 590CFM
20g flows 650CFM

How is that not a a difference. So i can say the 20g flow rate is not a terrible more than the 18g? But still the 16g is a better choice when the mhi 18g spools just as fast?

Your way off.

Edit ; not that i matters since Op is going with the 20g.

Im curently running a TD05H-20g on pump gas and 272 cams and drive 40 miles round trip to work mon-fri., and 250 miles round trip to the track atleast once a month, love it!. I dont really notice much in spool over the Evo3 16G ported out, which was my last turbo, but It definetly has better top end... I go to the track alot too, runs about 12 - 12.2 1/4 mile consistantly. 11.9 is my best. A 16G can be just as fast, but you can do it much more efficiently with a 20G.

You guys suggesting the 16G are forgetting hes at a ridiculously high elevation. The bigger the turbo you can get the better.

And just because someone in a race prepped car with every mod imaginable and then some made 400hp sure as hell does not mean your average Joe can bolt it on and expect the same.

The high elevation kills efficiency, and you will not make the same numbers as most people at the lower elevations.

14b 405cfm
Small 16g 505cfm
Big 16g 525cfm
Evo3 16g 550cfm

Op has an evo 3 16g= e316g. As I said not not much of a difference. Elevation is a factor but if one requires a Rebuild then i would use the 16g which is 400whp capable.

Yeah this is going to be my first build at high elevation. Last two builds where an E36 328 and a Celica with a lotus 3zz swap...was around the 12.5 mark in both of them... But up here I see it is a little more difficult to get into the 12s. I have seen srt8s and vets run 13.5 up here and they are supposed to be 12 second cars stock. So I am thinking I will just build the good strong daily and wait to turn it all up once I PCS. Good thing about the army, only have to deal with this place for 3 years... Lol

I am just an average joe who does all the work to my own car and I sure don't have a "race prepped" car yet I made over 400 awhp with the 16g and run consistent 11's in a full weight 2g.

The 16g is a VERY capable turbo and no one ever suspects that such a small turbo will give them such a clear view of your tail lights.

Your mod list pretty much aligns with what I said.

I've seen plenty of 16G's here in Utah tapped out at around 325whp or running 13's. If you guys have ever driven your car somewhere 4000+ feet high you would immediately feel your engine suffocating. The OP is even higher then that.

Yeah it falls on its face at higher rpms. Colorado Springs is 6,035 feet in most places...even my E36 was sluggish till I tuned it out a little but still almost a second slower down the track then what I was used to. I might put the 16g on for a little and tune it up to that then work my car into the 20g to see how she likes it...but doing a head swap this comin weekend, the BC stage 2 cams with valve train support with a port is just to much temptation not to put on as well.
