Im starting to yearn for more than my little t25, and starting to think that a 14b will make me happy while i am upgrading my system for a 16g. Question i have is, being that i have a 2g i will need an "install kit" ( i only say kit because i dont know what is required to bolt it up to a 2g) to put a 14b on my car. After i finish putting on the 14b, and going thru all the systems that need upgrading for the 16g, will i be able to just swap them out real fast? Like, do they use the same install kit for 2gs? I believe the 16g bolts right up to the 1g as does the 14b (obviously) so it should work out for me correct? As far as i know, the 14b + kit is all thats required in terms up upgrades. As in, i do not need any fuel mods, tuning mods, upgraded ic etc. Am i correct in my assumption that this would be a good middle step? or is the jump from a t25 to 14b not worth the 100$ or so? Should i hold out for a 16g and live with my little bastard turbo?

I appreciate any responses, and i only created this thread because i couldnt find my information by searching. I am a major advocate of 'search first' mostly because it saves time :thumb:

Also if what i wrote above is correct, anyone know a good place to get a 14b/16g install kit?

Thanks,

Dave

Edit: holding out for my little bastard turbo, would be for 3-5 months. as i dont have much time to lay under my car and i like to make sure everything is perfect before i move on to the next step of the tuning guide. I know the individual mods will help my t25 go faster, i would just feel better about it inbetween. personal thing i guess.

Thanks again

you need an install kit for any TDO5H turbo, that includes 14B and 16G. A good place to get an install kit is Slowboy Racing or RoadRace Engineering. A 14B is a good turbo upgrade your going from a T25 which flows 250cfm to a TD05H 14B that flows 450cfm. If i were you i would save for something bigger like a Td06 20G or T3/T4 Hybrid. Since going from a 14B to a 16G is a upgrade but it is a minimal upgrade.

I see, thanks a bunch for the information.

Anything bigger than the 16g that uses the tdo5h install kit? I'd hate to upgrade to the 14b just to swap it back out again, i would rather leave it with a t25. I know theres an 18g, but its sort of small in the dsm world for some reason, does it have the ass-backwards direction of the 20g?

Thanks for your help

just depends on your cash flow man.....if it is tight, then do the 14b.......you will be happy either way man.............just my .o2.......

hotwheels of turborides

Money isnt too tight, i just dont have the cash to go buy all the fuel-intake-intercooler upgrades at once, and i dont wanna have a gimp 16g while i do it. so for 75$ i can get a 14b that hopefully the ecu can manage by itself? while im waiting to get everything on. If my plan is screwed up lemme know please, im browsing for the parts with my credit card in hand

hehehehe, credit card in hand.............na, you are doing it right man..........i would do the 14b........it is gonna be fun as all get out man............hotwheels

well if you get a TD06 20G is still uses the 7cm2 housing which is INDENTICAL to the 14B 6cm2 housing. SO the coolant and oil lines will bolt right on. all you will need is an elbow put on the 20G and you can use the stock 2G LICP or get an aftermarket one

You do NOT need an install kit to install a 14b or a 16g. I recently did it, without the install kit.

Here's what I purchased for the install:

RRE - SS oil feed line - 60$
J-pipe - Free for me cuz I took it off the 91` i had.
1G oil return line - free for me.. OR you can cut the flex section out of your stock 95 return line and replace it with worm clamps and rubber hose. The 2g return WILL NOT work. I tried it.

You will probably also need a new manifold -> turbo gasket, the 7CM one from RRE is like 20$ or something. If you have a machine shop near you have them do it(if cheaper), thats all the piece from RRE is(just a piece of steel or aluminum cut to size and 4 holes (not including the 7cm one) in it. I actually had to deburr it also.

get some radiator hose to route the new turbo outlet (J-pipe) to the stock SMIC. What I did is I took the rubber intake hose off the 1G I had cut it up a bit, and cut the lower 95 intercooler hose and just shoved the radiator hose into the stock lower intercooler hose of the 95, secured with duct tape and worm clamp and more duct tape.

So...you can probably get all these parts for way less than any lame install kit. There's a J-pipe on ebay right now for like 8$.

EDIT: turbo water lines, switch the back with the front, bend till correctly positioned. Buy new Crush washers for the water lines, they are $1-2$ from your local parts store. I got em at NAPA.

One last question, will the 14b work fine on a stock fuel system? no logger either. Im sure it wont work to its full potential but it cant be too far off ? If i get some 1g injectors (450s i believe) will the ecu be able to tune em for me? And will i need a larger pump to run them ?

It'll work fine as long as you keep the boost low. No need to use the 1G injectors, the 2G's have 450's as well. Tuning will not be required until you up the boost more than 13-14 psi. I would purchase a logger ASAP tho.

If you don't have enough money to buy the needed fuel upgrades, then don't waste time with turbo's yet...If you are set on upgrading you probably can upgrade to a 14B because it is the stock 1G turbo but why bother? You will not be able to boost much higher considering the more boost you create the more fuel you need to compensate it...If you don't have the proper fuel mods then you probably just run too lean and you won't be able to have a very functional car anymore.. the 450cc injectors will be insufficient for basically any turbo above the 14b...My advice to you is work hard and save up that $$$...buy a fuel pump and a BOV + IC pipes and then at least an Datalogger+ Safc + 550cc's and you can buy a 16G..seems like a lot but it is the safe way to do it...

-Although it is a successful and common upgrade in 1G's, a 14b to a 16G is not a very big upgrade...So, make some money and get the proper support mods..Then if you upgrade to a 14B anyway, don't waste your time with the 16G there after...Look into turbos like T04b's which are around the same price as 16G's or for a little more check out decent 50 trims like an SCM50 :thumb:

Quick addon so people dont get pissed,

Why do 1gs and 2gs have similar ETs (with 1gs ahead) if the 2g has a way-smaller turbo?
its awesome from an upgrade-for-me standpoint but what made mitsu generate more power elsewhere and stick a gimpy turbo on?

I appreciate the advice,

I do have the money for the needed fuel upgrades, it is the time to put them all in im lacking. I was un-aware that the 14b was a very formidable turbo, as i thought it was gimpy like my t-25 but still better. My original post states, that im following the tuning guide for a 16g+. But i want something immediate and i would like to know if the 14b is a simple addon that will give me some more power while i do all other upgrades, mostly because it is very cheap. Turns out it is, and it will be fine on a stock fuel system if i watch it properly. And it will only get better as i walk along the path to a fast car.

2G's also have higher compression pistons.

Here's another good one for ya. Similar in weight, but the 2G's come rated at 210HP, 1g's are rated at, 195, or 190HP (I forget which...) why are they still rated at a faster ET?
