So call me an idiot if you want, but I've been looking and I can't find any videos of the 14b on an open-downpipe. Anyone ever do it? Can you hear the turbo through the exhaust? I believe that its the larger turbos that make more noise through the pipe. Just wanting a little insight before doing it to see if its worth something to play around with for a bit.

Here's my favorite sound sample of open down-pipe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXvslyLbPvk

It's fliipin loud..But it sounds sexy, when you can hear the turbine whinning..And then you let off and u can hear it wind back down..

Awsome..but whats the question,It's not hard to run open DP.

So you've done it on the 14b? I just didn't wanna get under there, unhook it and have it sound like crap and hook it back up. I'll probably do it before the next local meet to mess with the honda kids and their 4" cans on 2.25" exhaust. I'll make a video too because I really can't find one.

Yes I have done it..Alot of folks have as well..It's just an open DP, nothin special, but it takes your small diameter exhaust of of the equation..

Open Dp sounds better in my opinion than my 3 inch turboback.

Yes I've got mine open downpipe right now it is alot louder than with full 3 inch exhaust connected but that turbo wine sounds badass.

If you ask me, open DP doesn't sound very good. It's seriously loud and echoes off the pavement. There's no escaping the noise, if you roll the windows up it just comes through the floor. If it at least exits the chassis at some point, it will be much more enjoyable for you or anyone else in the car. I can't even stand an open dump wastegate without it being routed out of the car at some point. It gets really old.

My plan is to remove my random muffler shop 3" catback with eBay muffler. I'm going to chop the fart can off and run 3" straight pipe to the rear. I also plan to add a resonator somewhere in the system, just not sure where yet. That should give me that nice turbine whistle while still making the car enjoyable to drive for long periods. Basically a toned down version this:

BTW Justin, is there any way you could enlighten us (or me) on exactly what creates that sound? I've always figured it was exhaust gasses pushing past the turbine blades, much like the whistle from air being drawn in the compressor. Is that somewhat correct?

Then again don't be like the Honda kids and let that be your only mod on the car 'cause it will be pretty embarrassing for you to be all sound and no go like them :tease:

I run an open downpipe on my 14b. Its extremely loud, but i love it. Even around 1.5k when you push on the gas you can hear the turbo start to spool. I have stock 2.25" piping all the way back. When i disconnected the downpipe from the rest of the piping there is a very noticeable difference in spool up time and power.

Stop searching for just 14B's....any TD05H turbo will sound exactly the same through the exhaust.

Thanks for that! I figured that the sound would have something to do with the blades themselves

I don't plan on doing it for long at all, just one of those things that I have to do to get it out of my system LOL.

Well unlike the honda kids, our cars run 14s stock, not 18s, they have the tickets to prove it at the meets LOL.

Well if your anything like me, you might want to keep those bolts close. LOL

I had an open dump O2 housing for like a week. It was awesome the first day, and thoroughly sucked after that. Luckily it only took me a few days to find someone who would trade me a recirculated housing for my dumped housing. I had that thing installed that night so I could drive to school in peace the next morning.

At one point I ran a 14b with no intake pipe and on the exhaust side it was simply a 3 inch open downpipe with a wastegate dump O2 housing. Beautiful noise.. until the gate cracked open. Spool was instant, response was improved and it picked up 3.x lbs/min with no other changes with boost in the high teens - low twenties

When the flex pipe on my Dp broke off I had the same exact noise. Sounded cool but after a while it became rather annoying. Didn't sit too well every morning either with the neighbors LOL oh well.

It does- but all TD05H turbos use the same turbine wheel (14B, 16G, 18G, 68/71HTA, and most 20G's)....so the exhaust note will be exactly the same.

I did it for about a month, but it got to the point where I had to stay off highways. You can't even hear your radio over the sound. It's to easy to unbolt then bolt back up also. Just play around with it. Even get an electronic cut out so you can go back and forth when ever you feel like with a flip of a switch.

^LOL, yup - I too can concur to this. Most Honda drivers get shrinkage after pulling up next to you and they hear the BOV sound off. I find that it's usually enough to have them back off. However, there are always the dumb ones that have to find things out the hard way :ohdamn:

Ahh, I see, makes more sense now.

Lol, jeez. Like I said, it will probably be just for a day or maybe longer depending on how long I can take it. Cut out will probably def be down the line

Talking about the drag strip, right? Lol. Can't wait to hit the track with them when my car is done. They are thoroughly convinced that the b20/b18 is a far superior motor than the 4G63, but don't we have the strongest 4 cylinder? Our cars won't blow up under 15lbs of boost.

It's cool but just for a little bit at a time. It gets seriously loud and will shake EVERY little thing in/on the car. Thats why I got an electric cutout. :D

It is routed slightly to the side so it's not AS loud, but it is still pretty ridiculous.
My 16g (which will sound the same as 14b) sounds incredible. Even with just a tap of the gas in neutral.

Welcome to DMH Performance!
Give this a thought, cause you and your neighbors, will get tired of it.

I have an evo III 16g with a straight pipe with no car or resonator with the stock down pipe and you get tons of turbo whistle in the exhaust it sounds like a dumb truck haha I get comments on it all the time.. If you just give it a little gas and you hear that baby spool up! With a big turbo it sounds like a jet it's amazing! :D

Best way to scare Honda guys just run nice quite exhaust 3" to be exact with a dump tube and when you floor it they know you mean business then silent but deadly!!!:0

I hope this is not a daily driver as you would just be asking for attention from law enforcement. I would recommend the cut out idea to quite things up when you need to.

I made a thread about this over this past summer and I see Bud linked it.

I do it and have done it since spring. I love it. Sounds amazing (IMO) on every end. Idle, spool, cruising, etc. Really love sitting at a red light and having that whistle. Turns heads faster than anything.

It was only going to be a temporary thing but then after not being bother by the police month after month, I left it be. For about 8 months, I would passed cops driving the opposite direct, sitting along the road, pulling out in front of them, etc. Hell I pulled in to the gas pump with an officer pumping gas on the other side of me (that was the only pump open haha). Never had any problems. I had more problems with my 1G with a 4" turbo back.

I removed all of the exhaust minus the muffler. I though maybe that would help with my luck with the police. If they didn't see a muffler, they may have stopped me. But, maybe not. I have videos too. I will post one of them from after my BSEK install.

Yeah, I take my car out to Infineon Raceway for Weds Night Drags (bracket racing) during the summer. Fortunately for them; they have different classes so they tend to get matched up with the people that bring their mini-van, taurus, escort...and they still loose ROFL. I like what one member posted: "VTEC!? I wouldn't know? I'm already at full boost and halfway down the track by the time it kicks in."WTF Well you can't really compare a motor that is made to handle boost and one that isn't - we're more along the lines of EJ25/2JZ/SR20DET etc. Our 4g63 platform is known as one of the best motors for tuners ever made due to the iron block which allows us to run a good amount of HP on stock internals. I guess to each his own - I used to have an Rx7 and loved that Rotary Engine and RWD platform. However, add another person in the car and the lack of torque of that engine becomes very apparent. I can't even imagine driving a HB civic with a b20/K20 and experiencing massive torque steer and wheel hop because of its FWD setup. Plus, I always thought the kids driving them look like the legos toys - the car looks like a toy and all you see is their head when they are driving:tease:. Going back to the 14b/open exhaust - if you live where cops don't pull you over for exh noise and you can live with the "ringing in the ear" you'll eventually develop...I say go with it! :hellyeah:
