A buddy of mine has a 2G (FWD) and his turbo just went. He is able to get a 14B (brand new for about 150-200) locally. On top of that he would need an install kit right? which is about $150?

Is it worth it or is it better for him to just get another turbo thats bolt-on?

Will the 14B be bolt on if he uses a 1G mani?

The 14b is a much better turbo than the T-28. I would say it is worth it and most other turbos unless you go with the T-28 will need a install kit also. Go with the 14b or a big 16g. Good luck.

If a 1st gen mani was used then no install kit wouldn't be needed. Yes it's worth it, they spool faster than a t-25 and they flow more air.

The 14B is a good turbo for that price.. but we can't determine what your friend wants for his car... If he plans on upgrading, I would go big16G or EvoIII 16G. If he's just an everyday driver... 14B will be fine. The 14B stands by its name. Its has taken 1G awders to the high 12's.

hope this helped

Whoa... there's a little misinformation in this thread. I'll try to clear it up.

A 14b WILL require a few more things to install it on a 2g. It WILL bolt up to a 2g manifold just fine. What's needed are new water lines (unless you swap the 2g lines front and back and then bend them a little), a new oil feed line (HIGHLY recommended, get an SS one at SBR, RRE, DSMotorsport, etc) a new oil drain line from a 1g (a 2g drain line will work, but the bolt holes will need to be filed closer together to fit on the turbo) and new gaskets. Also, porting the turbine housing inlet and wastegate outlet is generally recommended to reduce boost creep and help with spoolup.

A 14b does not spool faster than a T25. It does flow more air more efficiently.

Installing a 14b is not any different than installing a 16g. Check out this vfaq and this vfaq for a more in-depth look at how to put one on. I followed these two vfaqs when I put my 14b on and it went very smoothly. I used the full install kit from RRE and it made life a whole lot easier. I recommend a full install kit, but if you're a DIY kinda guy, they have the parts to do that too.

It's very much worth it. :thumb:

I have a 14b on my 2nd gen and i love it.Its night and day over the t25.If your friend does not have the funds for a 16g then definately go with the 14b.The 14b will run good with out alot of supporting mods, the 16g will require some supporting mods for it to perform to its capabilities.

The 14b is L-O-L-tastic

My T25 held solid boost at 19-20psi with no creep. My 14B with the wastegate actuator disconnected (i.e. wastegate fully open) will creep to 23psi+ by 5500rpm. That's how much more air it flows. It pulls significantly harder.

Spool difference on my car is negligible.

With the right mods you should be able to pull 250-275hp on a 2g with a 14b. Some people have made more but this is average.

Besides, the 2g turbo manifold has bigger exhaust ports and will flow more than a 1g turbo manifold. Not to mention they are stronger and do not leak much like the 1gs overtime. The 14b turbo is the best bang for your buck and feels much better than the T-25 turbo because its powerband is much longer. And yes, the T-25 will spool up faster because it is a ball-bearing turbo compared to the TD05-14b turbo.

I say go for it. My 2g made 250 fwhp with the 14b at 17 psi of boost with 93 octane. I am still on stock fuel system so i am keeping the boost down just in case and the turbo is no longer efficient if i push it much higher.

I also had swapped a 14b into my 2g back in the day. I was very happy with it. With the T25 on there, it felt like it just ran out of breath in the higher RPMs. The 14b held solid all the way to redline. I never dynoed, but the car felt faster. I was very happy with it. If you are new to modding these, then I think it's a great next step. Take baby steps, don't just jump into large turbos. I think your friend will be very happy with that turbo!

Yeah, there is a good amount of difference, especially on topend performance. Installation is pretty straight foward and there are a couple of things you should do to help on your next turbo install. First, take that stud sticking out of the exhaust housing that connects to the exhaust manifold. Also, when taking the turbo out, taking off the exhaust manifold would make it a lot easier. There is the water-feed or drain line, I can't remember, going underneath the turbo as hard piping. Also, I separated the exhaust housing with the center cartirage when the turbo was out of the car and put them together when the exhaust housing was connected to the exhaust manifold. Hope it helps and enjoy your 14b turbo.

I havn't installed my 14b yet, I just grinded the wastegate hole to alow the flapper to open up all the way. I'm planning on putting it in later this month along with my 255hp, rewire, 13109 afrp, Fmic, Dsmlink. I'm hopeing it will hall ass. I hit my 14.08 last season before I installed my 3in turbo back on 17psi. I'm hopeing 20psi with dsmlink and my 3in back will get me into 13.2ish on my full weight 2g gsx.
