Hi. I'm new to turbos. As soon as I bought my TSi and drove it back home the TURBO BLEW  . I just got a used 14B and was about to put it on.......then I realized that I didn't know how  . I tried to find out how to swap the turbos on the web but couldn't find anything. Can someone help me out with my little problem? I would really appreciate it. :thumb:

Go to www.vfaq.com. The 16g install is the same as a 14b install. Do yourself a favor and buy an install kit, such as the one www.roadraceengineering.com sells. (The 16g install kit will work with the 14b) Follow the vfaq and use the parts from the install kit and you should be golden. Make sure to replace the turbo stud with a new bolt from the dealership, torque bolts down to specifications, and use plenty of anti-seize. The kit includes new oil feed and drain lines, so no worries there.

If this is on a 1g then you dont have to buy the install kit. You just need ( recommended )

2 oil return gaskets
1 j-pipe gasket
1 7cm turbo to manifold gasket
1 o2 housing gasket
2-4 12 mm crush washers
Oil and filter ( must have )
Coolant ( must have )

Drain the oil and coolant first. Disconnect the battery. Then unbolt the downpipe. Unbolt the j-pipe.Disconnect the oil feed, return, and coolant lines. Take out the o2 sensor. Put something under the turbo/o2 housing to support it, then next step will release it. The 4 bolts on top of the manifold that go into the turbo, unbolt those 4 and the turbo should slide right out, with a little wiggling to get around the oil/coolant lines. Then just unbolt the o2 housing from the turbo, switch over to new turbo, intall new gaskets, re-attach everything then add oil and coolant.

Then to get her started. Make sure you reconnect the battery then near the batter there should be a little black box with 3 larger fuses in it. One is labeled " mpi " pull that fuse. Prime the turbo for oil/coolant. ie by trying to start the car for about 5 seconds or so. It wont start cuase the fuse is out. Then put the fuse back in and it should start up. Make sure you check for leaks. If you have a 2g I can give you a " write-up " if you need it, in fact im goign through the same process right now.

Can I use the old parts (gaskets, washers, etc.)?

RRE, slowboyracing, and the good old Mitsu dealership will have them. As for if 16g gaskets and such working, the answer is probably yes. The 14b and 16g are both TDO5's and share the same center section, so many of the parts are similar.

As you're taking off your old turbo, use lots of penetrating lubricant (PB Blast, WD40, etc) to lube the manifold-to-turbo bolts and O2 housing-to-down pipe bolts before you try to get them off. Breaking wrenches is a common issue if you don't. :) Also, when taking gaskets off the oil drain pipe and oil pan, make sure you get ALL of the old gasket material off those surfaces. There was still some old gasket on my oil pan when I put the new gasket and pipe on it, and I developed a leak, which required another trip to the dealership for a new gasket and getting under the car again.

Do some searching on this site for write-ups and check the vfaq. It's under the Turbo section, under "16g install in a 2g".
Edit: I found the link for you:
http://www.vfaq.com/mods/2G-16G.html

The instructions will be VERY similar, but for a 1g, a few things may be different. Either way, you're replacing a 14b WITH a 14b, so make good observations about where things go.
