I don't want this to be another attack the newbie thread, so take it easy on me
I am looking into getting a 1997-1999 Eclipse GSX. I am going to pay cash for the car but I want to take a loan out for stereo and engine mods to help build credit. I am going to do maintinance after I buy it. I know it's realistic to get into the 13's with these cars. What kind of money am I looking at and what would the set up be?
Thanks for you comments

first off, make sure all of your maintenance is done before modding. having a 50trim with an unhealthy engine will not only net you 14's but will blow your motor up too..

with that being said, after all maintenance is done i'd venture to say <2.5k will get you into 13's.

probably all of stage 1 [dsmtuners guide] and a 14b turbo will get you there. if you're really cheap and ghetto get a used 14b and a NEW 2g install kit and you're good to go

Thank you for Pointing me to that page. It was very helpful.
With that being said, what kind of gas milage would I expect to get? I mean would it be horrible?
Not to much different.
Mods don't always mean wretched gas milage.

Alot of guys that are heavily modded on here actually say they get good gas milage.
Read the "GAS MILAGE" threads search it up.

You may be surprised but many people have 2g's that run 13's.

13's are no biggie for an AWD.

12's....hehe. the number EVERYONE chases probably the longest.

I went 13.40 for under $1600.

To run lo thirteens you need at least:

a 14b/16g/T28 or similiar turbo.

2 1/2" crushbent exhaust

Dave Brode UICP with a 1G blow off valve.

Manual boost controller

Conical air filter

190 lph fuel pump

Thats about the minimum to safely pull a respectable 13.XX.

I use safely LOOSELY.

At 18 psi on one of the above mentioned turbos, you'll be sooo lean on your stock injectors and pump gas.......I will not be responsible for any damages that occur.

But you can smoke a Z28 or a pre 03' Cobra with relative ease if you can drive on those mods listed above., long as your not trying to race on 22" spinnerz.

I have a couple more mods than what I listed and ran 13.40 @ 101 at 4600 ft elevation on pump gas and a stock clutch.

I haven't been back to the track since I modded my 1G BOV, and found a place that sells 110 octane.

12.9XXXXXX is good enough me to stop modding completely.

Ohh and my 98' GSX is FULL weight...spare, jack, tools, baby seat, shoe polish, cd changer, 1/2 tank fuel, stock rims, full interior...yada yada.

Good luck.

ohhh and I see around 16-18 mpg around town ( i have a heavy foot too ) and around 28-30 on the highway.

I also stress the maintenance upkeep. DSMs will give you some serious negative feedback if not treated properly.

With a GSX, there is not much effort to make it run 13s. A GST/TSI is a completely different story, but I digress.

A GSX will get you 13s probably without doing all the stage 1 mods-but do them anyway since stage1 isn't expensive. Will all the project dsms running the 14b turbo so well-I say go with that. They are dirt cheap in comparison to a 56trim, green, red, or any other big turbo on the market. But keep in mind also that parts alone, and driving skill doesn't mean jack when in comes to tuning-that's where it's at!

Good luck, and have fun. :thumb:

All good and true but if you ever plan on launching that thing more than ten times you're going to need a newer stronger clutch desperately.

It would definetly be much easier in a AWD car. I have a buddy with a 1991 laser FWD who on slicks only runs a 8.7 in the 1/8th. Which is in the high 13's or so down the 1/4.

He has a 17c turbo, turbo timer, AEM stand alone, AEM wide band, full 3'' exhaust, ported 2g manifold, ported o2 housing, RFL BOV, a BJ cylinder head sheet metal intake, coilovers, 2g pistons, ACT 2400 clutch, equal length halfshafts, limited slip....I can't remember what else but I know he has more. Another friend of mine has a 1989 firebird with a l98 350...all he has is LCA relocation brackets, headers and free mods and he runs a 8.7 on street tires...
