1.8 n/t...no spark

Hello all, My friend purchased a 92 eclipse 1.8 off of another kid i know. Well the kid that owned it had done a bunch of "custom" wiring to the car. Basically he had installed everything from a sound system to neon lights and not one of the things was wired correctly. Well the car started having some problems. First it would flash all the dash lights on and just die. It did that for a couple weeks till it finally stopped running. Then it would intermitantly start and run for a random period of time, then just die out. This is when i stepped in. The car didn't seem to do anything special when it would intermitantly run, no factor i could find would help it start and no factor would make it shut off but once it started stalling there was nothing i could do to save it. Now it won't even run at all. I have pulled all the shady wiring out so that really shouldn't be a factor any more but i don't know what it might have fried. The car doesn't get any spark when you turn it over. That is as far as i can get. The harnesses going to the distributor are getting power. I don't have any experience with the 1.8's so i am not even sure if the thing is suppose to have a coil. I would love some help on what i could test to see if it fried or what parts i can throw at it to test some thing. Thanks in advance - Carl

It could be the ecu, pull it and check the caps. The 1.8 ecu are pretty cheap, See if you can find one and swap it in.

yes, it could be the ecu which is very common and it could also be the coil in the distributer, which can't be replaced without replacing the hole distributer this is also very common with them.. my guess is its prolly one of them for sure... theres acouple on ebay all the time pretty cheep both distributers and ecu's
