On a 1993 1.6L Automatic, what, at the minimum must be removed to lift the head off the block? I have a 1993 Elantra with a Mitsu 1.6L engine (in the car) and it has a brand new head gasket which has either debris on it, or is already bad because it is allowing exhaust pressure to escape into the coolant line/radiator. I figured I could remove the valve cover and then the head bolts and lift the head a tad towards the timing belt and just pull the gasket off and slide a new one in and bolt the head back down without removing the intake manifold. The exhaust manifold wont be too much of a problem if it MUST be removed. This is a little more difficult than DOHC engines I'm used to. I know on my 1.8L Isuzu DOHC it is close to the same but I didnt have to unbolt a lot of stuff just to lift the head to change the gasket and that car is a D/D with no overheating issues at all. Any advice would be great!

I'm trying to do this without removing everything just to replace the gasket. :(

dont cut corners and try to wiggle it off with other things still attached. i did this to a car at the junk yard, which i needed the cyl head, and i tried to wiggle it off. after i did this i looked at the surface of the head and there were deep scrapes on the head surface :| not too many of us know wbout that car. but im just warning you to not cut corners.. or bad things happen ;)

Yea, I guess so. I guess I'll pull the accessories off and then undo the exhaust pipe from the manifold and lift the head up as high as I can and replace the belt. I'm not going to put a lot of time and effort into this engine just to sell it off for $850 or less.
