1/4 of gsx 5spd to auto

I want to say the 5 speed was .1 faster. The auto is no slouch. It is just limited at the amount of power it can handle in stock form.

well how bout FWD?

I think the thing is the lag that the auto takes to hit boost. 5 spd you can rev and by the time the wheels catch your already hittin it.

? With an auto you can power brake. Have boost right off the line.
Thought maybe not the smartest thing in a FWD.

Power braking in my car is awsome. It just throws you back in the seat especially when you dont expect it. Ill do it at a light and my friend will ask what im doin then SLAM, and everyone always says "holy shit". That is prolly the only thing i like about automatic transmissions.

I can't offer a stock for stock comparison, but I'll throw out this data point just for grins. My 95 awd auto pulled a best of 13.8@100 with a 16g and associated goodies. The exact mods were transferred to my 95 awd manual which then ran a [email protected]. I believe I had both tuned as well as could be using a datalogger and leaned out with an AFC. Basically, the auto was a dog... and screw the "but the auto can build boost off the line!" crap. It's slow as shit off the line with the stock converter which only let me brake torque up to around 3000rpm. Anyway, I'm a bit biased, as I'm more interested in open track stuff and the auto just couldn't give me the control I needed/wanted for that.

If you're just doing straight line racing, auto is just as good as manual. In fact, it's probably better because it decreases the time needed to shift. However, for real track racing manual is king.

What are you talking about, "straight line racing"???
Isn't drag racing, or what u call "trak racin" in a straight line??? just wandering.

And the ONLY differenceis an automatic will be ahead at the begining, but the the manual will win. automatics are better on the lower gear, while manuals own over in the top gears all because of the gear ratios. If you get the automatics computer reformated to shift later they will be ALOT closer!!! And that guy way above is really close to his guess it will be about .1 secs

Wrong ..... a stick will always outlaunch a auto.... you can pick your RPM's and if you can drive you will always get a big jump on an auto. Autos are better from a roll (still not as strong as a 5-speed), slugish from a dead stop.

On average two stock equal auto and stick cars , the stick will be .3 to .5 seconds quicker through the 1/4 mile.

I have yet to be beaten by a manual off the line in my auto. They can't build the boost that I can power braking.

Haha Riiiiight. What's your best 60 ft. outta your auto? I'd bet the best you've had is a 1.9, maybe a 1.8. Well, I guess we shouldn't doubt it... I mean you could've just raced the worst manual drivers ever.

all were on the street, have yet to gone to track. But yeah probably bad drivers who knows, i've just been lucky. Although there was my friends syclone that just walked me good, of course he's alchol injected (cheater ;) )

Stock for stock, an auto will always get smashed off the line. An Auto's timing is retarded at above something like 50% throttle below 2500 rpm. Also, timing is retarded back to zero on shifts, and thus, slightly negating the advantage of "no lift to shift."

A slightly modded auto hang with most manuals anyday. An auto (fwd) with a Translab shift kit can smash the pedal at 70 mph and spin the tires on the shift just like any manual with an aftermarket clutch could.

Of course a fully built auto will smash any manual. Look at the drag racing crowd. Most hardcore racers are running auto's. A popular upgrade for the Supra crowd is the GM 4T65-E (I think that's the number) auto tranny.

Funny....considering every race I have seen of single turbo supras 6speed vs auto, the auto gets the jump and gets passed hard on the top end.

OK, let's try this again...

Assuming all else is equal (including engine mods), a fully built auto will beat a built manual on the drag strip. I don't know if a fully built auto will take a built manual to 200 mph or whatever.

Taken straight from SCC's "Supras Invade Las Vegas": "...all other 9-second cars that night had heavily-modified automatics (some even using the good ol' GM T400E...)..."

Supras are admittedly faster than shit with a manual, but the hardcore racers (<10s) are all running with autos.
