Hello folks, I can't figure this one out. Ok, let me just cut to the chase, I replaced my front 02 sensor about a year ago. I had one empty pod on my gauge cluster and I had an A/F gauge lying around so I installed that. I know its disco lights and everything, please. Its just to fill a spot. Anyway, fast forward to today, car has been running fine, disco lights going all over the place, all very normal. An hour ago, disco lights again, everything is all and well. Well I was coming home from work today and driving home on the highway, I was getting late for dinner so I stomped it a tad on an empty section of the interstate. I was going a bit fast so I let off the gas to slow down. About 10 mins later I just look at the gauges real quick and notice no disco lights from the A/F gauge. Well its good for something. There is no CEL, I'm stumped. Whenever I'm at idle and give it a little gas, their is some minor activity in the lean section of the gauge for like a fraction of a second and then dead. Sometimes no activity. I'm wondering whats up. I had replaced the 02 sensor like I said a year ago with OEM.
So I get home, I hook up the pocketlogger to check if perhaps the wires to the A/F gauge are faulty, well pocket logger confirms what the A/F gauge says, no activity. The rear seems to be working fine, front is just dead. I don't understand. If its dead, why no CEL? the cel light works.
I'm going to let the car cool down and check again tommorow, I did rag on it a little hard today on my way home because I really getting late so perhaps I fouled it or something.
Any ideas? Can an 02 sensor go out just like that? I really really don't want to spend another 100 dollars for a new 02 sensor. I'll check tommorow morning.
 
It is possible that it died like that. Unlikely but possible. It is also possible that your fuel trims are way out of wack for some reason. If they get out of the ecus range of adjustment the O2s will stop cycling like normal in closed loop.
 
Well, when the o2 sensor had initially crapped out on me the first time a year ago, it threw a CEL. This time no CEL, I checked this morning, there is more activity, but it's very very little from the 02 sensor. I'm really upset. I guess that's another 100 dollars...damn you DSM!!!!
 
Um folks, big uh oh. Replaced the o2 sensor with a brand spanking new one from the dealer... Nothing, no activity on new one. Wiring? How can the wiring go bad? I'm gonna try resetting the ecu and seeing whats up, why is it not giving me a CEL. Any ideas? I'm not very good at wiring, nuts bolts etc, I can handle. Wiring? I can't.
 
i also believe i have an o2 sensor issue. check eng light has been on for like 3 weeks and i finally took it to autozone and they hooked it up and said it was a bad o2 sensor. so then yesterday im doing like 100mph and my car just like dies and i cant get it past 2500 rpms and it wont go over like 40mph. in neutral it idles real weird. i replaced it today with a universal o2 sensor (the one before cat) and it still has the same problem. any tips ? thanks for your time
 
Well, mysteriously my 02 sensor issue has fixed itself. I let the car idle and warm up and the A/F gauge is back to its ricey antics. I'm almost considering keeping the gauge as had it not been for it, I would have not known about the bad 02 sensor. Anyway, jfarm, I believe the 02 sensor won't cause your car to die. When I bought my GSX, it had a completely shot 02 sensor. The f8ckers even took out the CEL bulb so I wouldn't notice, i was just too excited to find a good GSX with low miles that I didn't think to check if the CEL comes on when I turn the key. Anyway, the car drove fine with 02 sensor that was shot. Just some terrible mileage, about 100 miles to the tank and slightly bad power and shit load of carbon puffing out of the back, otherwise it was fine. Get a pocketlogger, I doubted its usability initially but it has saved my life many times. I would be on the verge of spending big bucks to fix a small issue but with the pocketlogger I was able to easily diagnose a problem and fix it cheap.
I don't think your 02 sensor is bad, btw, my personal preference is to use OEM 02 sensor, I don't like that rewiring crap. I would check your fuel delivery.

PS: Check if all the vacumm/air lines to the actuator on the turbo are connected. I had one of them drop out and my car was running infinite boost. 30lbs at 2500RPM, I would hit some terrifying fuel cut.
 
CEL's for bad O2's aren't very reliable. I can completly unplug my O2 sensor, and the light won't come on because it's running without it, just like it does when the car is warming up. It can take as long as a few days for a CEL to show up for a bad O2.

i found that the mesh piping came off of the small factory intercooler. (goes from turbo to intercooler).

when i attached it back on nice and tightly and attempted to start the car it would no longer start like it did yesterday. i then took the pipe back off and tried to start the car. nothing. when you turn the key it turns over but doesnt start. the factory boost gauge goes up real high too for some reason.

ps. i have a 16g kit installed on my 96 gst
