Hi everybody,

like the title said , 2 days ago after i finished the rebuilt project and wants to run the car , i just checked everything and ready to start but the engine crank and cranking and wants to start but No !!! the engine dont like to run , and i got 0042 fuel pump malfunction error then i start to trace and check wirings and modules that relating to this problem from MPI relay fuse ( Fine ) , take out the gold cover of MPI relay and checked and its fine too ( i also used another MPI without success ) , Active the fuel pump with fuel pump signal on labtop and firewall and both of them enabled the fuel pump and sent the fuel behind the rail , plus i just remove the feed line before the fuel rail and test it one more time and still fuel comes out with perfect pressure but car wont Start !!!!!!!!! again use +12 constant to pin 13 of ecu on fuel pump side and ECU side ( pump starts ) but still car wont start !!!!
I must mention that the ignition coil was fine ( all spark plug wires tested and fine ) , plus i switched on the ignition key and turn the CAS right and left and again fuel pump activated . and i tested 2 another good ecu's and still No success ( it means its not from ECU for sure ) . CONFUSED
My injectors are 1100 High Z FIC that i already eliminated the injector resistor ( there is 4 black wires for each injectors and 1 white power wire and i spliced all of them together and soldered ) .
After that im really doubt about shorted wiring because i saw some weird connectivity between some wires , for example pin 108 ( ign switch -ST) has connectivity with pin 2 , pin 3 , pin 6 , pin 9 of MPI relay and pin 101 , pin 106, pin 103 , pin 104 , pin 64 , pin 13 , pin 14 , pin 18 of ECU pinout but when i unplug the fuel pump 4 pin connector and ign switch triangle connector then this connectivity GONE !!!! :confused::confused:
 
I would trace the START wire from your ignition switch, it sounds like it could be either grounding out or shorting against other wires. Also, the start position in the ignition switch makes a connection on the other two IGN wires to turn everything on during cranking, so the switch itself may have gone bad. Have you tried roll/bump starting?
EDIT: Just saw you finished a rebuild, bump start might not be a good idea.. :ohdamn:

I already checked them and there is nothing that i can see with my eyes maybe this short or grounding behind the dash board but i think its impossible since i didnt touch there , and for testing the ignition switch itself i think there was a simple way that i unplug the blue 6 pin connector and if the shorts from ign switch itself then shorts or grounding must be gone but it didnt when i tried . plus yea i really prefer to start the car normally without bump start because this baby wants to wake up from a long time sleeping ;)
 
Probably your best bet to check the ignition switch, would be to probe each IGN wire for voltage while you turn the key to the start position. Since the components themselves are all working, and the issue only presents itself during cranking, that's what I would suspect. Does the ignition fire during cranking?

You mean the spark from ignition wires ? yeah i already checked them and all of them have sparks ( fire ) and when engine cranking cranking then it wants to starts but again died , it means you can see the smoke comes out from exhaust .

Hi everybody,

Two days ago I finished the rebuilt project and wanted to run the car. The engine just cranked and cranked and wants to start but the engine didn't run and i got 0042 fuel pump malfunction error.

I started to trace the wiring and check the modules that relate to this problem, from MPI relay fuse ( Fine ), take off the gold cover on MPI relay and checked it's fine too ( i also used another MPI without success ).

When I activate the fuel pump with fuel pump signal on laptop and firewall, both of them enabled the fuel pump and send fuel behind the rail. If I remove the feed line before the fuel rail and test it, fuel comes out with perfect pressure but the car still wont start!

If I connect +12 constant to pin 13 of ecu on fuel pump side and ECU side the pump starts but still engine wont start!

I must mention that the ignition coil was fine ( all spark plug wires tested and fine ). When I switch on the ignition key and turn the CAS right and left and again the fuel pump activates.

I tested 2 other good ECU's and still no success. I assume this means its not from ECU. CONFUSED.

My injectors are FIC 1100cc High Z that I eliminated the injector resistor to use ( there is 4 black wires for each injectors and 1 white power wire and i spliced all of them together and soldered ).

I'm wondering about shorted wiring, because I saw some weird connectivity between some wires. For example pin 108 ( ign switch -ST) has connectivity with pin 2, pin 3, pin 6, pin 9 of MPI relay and pin 101, pin 106, pin 103, pin 104, pin 64, pin 13, pin 14, pin 18 of ECU but when I unplug the fuel pump 4 pin connector and ign switch triangle connector then this connectivity GONE!!!! :confused::confused:

So, your fuel pump works when activated by your laptop or by the check connector on the firewall. That eliminates the the Ignition fuse, MPI relay and part of the ECU. The 42 Fault Code is caused by the ECU not seeing 12v at pin 13 when it has the pump turned on. ECU pin 13 is usually just tied into the same wire as runs from the MPI relay to the fuel pump. Since you can apply 12v to the wire going to pin 13 and have the pump run it's not the wire but either the connection to the ECU pin is bad or the ECU has a problem.

Are you still getting the fault each time?

The ignition switch does interesting things to the inactive outputs. If you check at the switch connector (disconnected from the harness) I think you'll find that it grounds the ST signal when the switch isn't in the START position. Many of the other pins are either connected to ground or have a low resistance to ground. That doesn't mean they are shorted together normally.

If the car will crank and fire the plugs, will it start if you use a little starting fluid in the intake?

You say it wanted to run when you cranked it, what does that mean?
Is it firing but not idling?

The code 42 is one issue but they won't keep the car from running unless the fuel pump really isn't working.

So, your fuel pump works when activated by your laptop or by the check connector on the firewall. That eliminates the the Ignition fuse, MPI relay and part of the ECU. In fact , i tried 2 other ecu's from the GVR4's that runs just fine , its the exact reason that i eliminate this possibility

I didnt check this way , but i can check it ASAP

i dont know how to spell this just seems something prevent to run the engine , it seems sometimes the engine run for 0.5 sec or 1 sec then shut down , is there any mechanical problem that may cause to get 42 code ? im sure about timing and any other mechanical things

I found the one white wire from interior connector on passenger side cutted that this wire connect to pin 109 ECU ( Ignition pulse detect - Tach ) then i repaired it but still got the 42 code . i dont know that this pin has any effect on this error or not ?
plus i just checked all the wiring and connectivity and voltage on important wires that relating to this problem : in all of this test ECU disconnected and MPI relay disconnected .

All wires connectivity with Ground when the key on :
pin 2 MPI , pin 6 MPI , pin 9 MPI , pin 13 ecu , pin 14 ecu ( its gone when throttle body open ) , pin 18 .

and in the answer of Mr.Steve about "If the car will crank and fire the plugs, will it start if you use a little starting fluid in the intake?" Yes sir , its just starts and works find but died after 5-6 secs .

and after all this tests and exams i think there is a problem on pin 7 MPI that is open circuit but not sure , please let me know which one is normal and which one is abnormal .

Please note that for most of your testing you need the ECU and MPI relay installed.

With the ECU and MPI relay disconnected you should see:

-MPI pin 2 when key off has 0v and when key on still 0v. This black/green wire runs from the output of the fuel pump side of the MPI relay (Pin 2) to the fuel pump. It provides switched 12v from the relay to the pump. Since your relay is disconnected there isn't any voltage on it key on or key off. The odds are high that this would measure as having continuity to ground because the other side of the fuel pump is grounded and there is a path through the motor to ground.

-MPI pin 3 when key off has 1.2v (not see 12v) and when key on 12v. This black/white wire (the fuel pump power input) comes from the ignition switch and should have power when the key is on. I wouldn't expect any voltage when the key is off.

-MPI pin 4 and 5 shouldn't have any voltage on them with the relay disconnected. With the relay and ECU connected they will have 0v with the key off and 12v with the key on.

-MPI pin 6. This black wire is the ground connection for the other fuel pump coil that is connected to pin 9.

-MPI pin 7 when key off has Open Circuit and when key on still Open Circuit (No constant voltage or connectivity detect at all). This white/red wire runs from MPI Relay pin 7 to ECU pin 56. Since your relay is disconnected there isn't any voltage on it key on or key off. When the MPI relay is connected one of the coils in the relay has one side connected to pin 7 and the other side is connected to pin 3 so if there is 12v at pin 3 (the fuel pump power input) there should be 12v at pin 7 until the ECU pulls pin 56 low and causes current to flow through the coil and activates the FP side of the relay.

-MPI pin 8 when key off has 0v and when key on still 0v with the relay disconnected. With the relay connected should have 12v key off and close to 0v with the key on. This black/blue wire runs to ECU pins 63 and 66. The ECU pulls pin 63 low when it wants to turn on the MPI relay, when it sees 12v on ECU pin 110.

-MPI pin 9 when the key off 1.2v ( not see 12v) and when the key on 3.8v~5v.
This black/yellow wire runs to the circuits that activate the starter. It shouldn't have any voltage on it until the ignition is in the START position while your cranking. It also runs to ECU pin 108.

-MPI pin 10 when the key off 12v and when the key on still 12v. This black/red wire runs to the MPI fuse on the battery terminal. It should always have 12v, it's the input for the MPI power from the fuse.
 
Oh thanks for the infos and here is the News :

I just relocated the power transistor and bolt it on the timing cover with that small capacitor with one wire that abd they are not connected to Ground or body , is there any effect on this problem ?

Another things that i couldnt activate the fuel pump from labtop anymore , but still i can active it from the plug on firewall and i also checked the connectivity between pin 109 and pin 4 power transistor and its connected and also check the connectivity with the 3 wires on coil connector and they are also connected just fine . after that i tried the ECU's on another car that runs good and both ECU's fine and i could activate the FP from labtop on that car .

plus MPI pin 2 has 12v when turn key to starts and also its activate the fuel pump at starts But then i found the abnormal things over there that the MPI fuel relay activate on starts and jumped after 1-2 secs and i think the fuel pump will not send the fuel when relay disconnected and then its the reason that engine died . another test that ive done that i start the car and after 1 sec my friend force the MPI relay directly connected with his finger and car works but so crappy and works in different period times for example one times works for 10 secs and another times works for 5 secs and then died , it means still we have problem overthere and i dont think jumped off the relay after 1-2 secs normal . plus i got the log on dsmlink when i tried to starts and my friends force the MPI relay connected . Plus i didnt get code 42 anymore from ECU !!!!!!

please check some logs that ive got today from when the car starts and died , you can find when the engine runs from battery voltage that goes from 12v to around 14.4 and just please let me know what you think ?

i got some logs from todays test that cars died after 2 secs and fuel pressure drops from 40 to 20 and then near 0 , but then i tried to force the fuel pump turn on with the plug on firewall and then starts the car again and it wants to die after 2 secs but fuel pressure not drop and i tried to keep the engine alive with playing with throttle , but the engine wants to die plus i heard some weird sound from injectors ( it seems something positive shorted to negative inside the injectors ).
plus i just want to know is it normal that the ISC motor starts working when turn the CAS left and right rapidly ? and i got two errors 0022 crankshaft sensor malfunction and 0042 fuel pump malfunction after this work that i think its something relating to the CAS .
just please check the logs and let me know what you think about it plus you can understand when the engine died and i tried again to turn the engine on !!!!!

Moving the CAS left and right rapidly isn't normal so nothing the ISC does in that case would be considered normal.

What is normal is for the ISC to move in and out when the ECU is turned on.

If you don't stick to a methodical plan when testing your results will be inconclusive and you will only solve a problem by luck.

Perhaps you should review the diagnosing a no-start tech article to help you make a plan to eliminate the potential issues. You should be able to answer each of the questions. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-miscellaneous/217951-how-diagnose-no-start.html

Since you have DSMLink you have better than average insight into the electrical side.

I must thank you sir for your helps cause after alot exam and error i starts the car with force the FP turn on from plug on firewall and this time cars fired up . its the wrong wiring from previous owner to barometric pressure wire since there is 2 wires on MAF connecotr that has the same color ( green/yellow strip ) and i just fixed it with the correct wire and then car starts . but still i have a problem , it means my previous problem that fuel pump activated at starts with MPI relay but MPI relay disconnected the jumper after 2 secs on starting the car and then car died ( if i press the relay connected with finger car work fine ) .
plus i couldnt turn on the fuel pump from ecu any more . you remember that i already can do it . another things that i must mention is that i just test this ecu on another DSM that works good and then i activated the pump from that car with no problem :confused:
Now for this problem where should i check and why the signal from ecu no wroks any more ? like i said if turn on the pump manually from the plug on firewall then car works like charm but if not then starts for 2 secs and then died . another thing is that i didnt get the 0042 code anymore too . it means 2 sing is no more available , first code 0042 is not appear anymore and i couldnt activated the fuel pump from ecu any more too .

Since your relay is disconnected there isn't any voltage on it key on or key off. When the MPI relay is connected one of the coils in the relay has one side connected to pin 7 and the other side is connected to pin 3 so if there is 12v at pin 3 (the fuel pump power input) there should be 12v at pin 7 until the ECU pulls pin 56 low and causes current to flow through the coil and activates the FP side of the relay.

ECU pin 56 is pulled low to activate the fuel pump. Your's no longer seems to be working so the fule pump turns off when you stop cranking. The test is to ground MPI relay pin 7 and see if the car stays running, if so the ECU is malfunctioning and you might have blown the driver for the ECU pin.

I will be recheck these wires again but i have a bad news that it seems my own good ECU that works fine my dsm damaged after check it on the GVR4 with wiring problems . its occured when i force FP and starts the car and now i got code 0022 crankshaft sensor malfunction :(:( . now im sure that its not my wiring harness and its exactly back to ECU , then would you please let me know that which line should i trace on the ECU board for this error cause its my daily drive car and i need it as soon as possible , plus is this problem means some hardware damaged on the ecu board ? i couldnt find any visible damage with my eyes but maybe if i know the line to trace then i will find it and wants my local electrician to fix it . i know that you have alot good expreince in ECU repairs but honestly its really so hard for me to send it to you to repair sir .

I'm not as knowledgeable steve, but I'll give you my input.

If you suspect the ECU is at fault for the fuel pump issue, my guess would be that C106 has leaked, and caused damage to the trace leading CM 105.

From ECU pin 56 the circuit path goes to CM105. The trace continues on the bottom side of the PCB, then back to the component side of the PCB, and then continues on to pin 7 of IC109.(second to last from the bottom of the driver)

If you continuity test this from ECU pin 56 to the driver then it should ring through to the pin on IC 109. If it does then I would say the driver is bad.

As far as the crank angle circuit goes, there are a few components involved in this circuit so please bear with me. I'm working on an electronics degree, but I'm not quite finished yet.

Crank Angle Sensor Circuit: Pin 2 on B-32(CAS connector), ECU pin 21, C115, top of R103, R6, C33 POS, IC4 pin 40

The bottom of R103 is connected to R101, R118, R2, R3, C10 POS, IC4 pin 1(5v PWR out)

12v power from ECU pin(MPI relay pins 4 & 5) is tied to R104, R7, C27 POS, IC4 pin 39

C27 and C33 NEG are both connected together which are connected to sensor GND AND GND(ECU pin 24, 101 & 106), and pin 4 on B-32(CAS connector)

I would say that if the ECU is at fault that you may have a blown GND trace somewhere, bad components in the circuit, or worst case an issue with IC4. I think it may be best to send it ECMTuning, and have them put the ECU on the test bench, if all of the things external to the ECU test good

Good advice. I don't repair them anymore so ECMTuning is the place to go.

Since the ECU was working earlier I'm guessing something got shorted out while playing around.

First i must thank you my friends that helps me on this way step by step and now i want to check everything one more time , first thing that i found today is that when i connected the pin 7 mpi to ground then fuel pump turn on when switch on the key and car just stay on and mpi relay will not disconnected anymore with those 2 bad ecu's BUT when i just install the fresh ECU from another GVR4 just for test ( cause im really worry that maybe again damage this ecu too ) the car runs just fine and MPI didnt disconnected and no need to force fuel pump anymore . Now we sure that those 2 ecu's that cant turn on the fuel pump from labtop have the problem .

BUT the weird thing is here cause when i tested these damaged ECU's on my car then i can turn on and turn off the fuel pump from labtop :O HOW ??? it means my car didnt die with both ecu's after 2 secs and mpi relay didnt disconnected after strats ?????? my car also have the galant vr4 engine wiring harness then is it possible that there is very wrong wiring in that GVR4 that damaged ECU's and couldnt turning on the fuel pump ? since this car already have the problem on MAF connector ( bad wiring on barometric pressure ) and we tried to turn on the car with many methods like force the fuel pump from the plug on firewall and forece the fuel pump from the fuel pump connector side then is it possible this ECU's damaging relating to this works ?! maybe one or two time the fuel pump had small connectivity with body for few secs . plus if you remember pin 109 already cutted from interior harness and its deactivated when i tried to turn on the car again is it possible this damaging relating to it ?!
plus how can i diagnosis that my engine wiring harness still have problem since you know the engine starts normally with that good ecu but i really cant risk on that ecu from cause its from another person and he will kill me if i toasted his ecu like mine .
if i find the way to diagnosis where is my wiring hanress still shorted or open circuit then we will find everything .

please let me know what you thinks.

According to steve's website the ECU differences between 1g's and GVR4's are the configuration resistors(R129/R130), except for the earlier dual board GVR4 ECU's.

If the software force doesn't work, but a hardwired force will, then I would be inclined to say that something is not right with IC109. I do know that CPU is connected to the IC on a few of its pins. As far as the TPSdelta issue, I don't know. Do the analog inputs read correctly?

Given the nature of the issues you're having, I still think you'd be best to send the ECU off to ECMTuning. Not knocking your local electronics repair shop, but the guys at ECMTuning know our ECUs inside and out.

I noticed you just posted new info. If you're trying to troubleshoot the wiring, then the only suggestion I can give is to get out the manual, dig up the wiring schematics, get your DMM, and test the wiring out from the connectors in the engine bay to the ECU.

Yes sir TPS voltage can log and the TB percent but no TPSdelta ! is it possible that i damaged the ECU's with forcing the fuel pump in several times from plug on firewall ?! sometimes car works for 30 mins at idle with this method !!

I would say it's a possibility of damage to the ECU occurring from bad wiring. Also, I definitely wouldn't be "smoke testing" ECU after ECU on the car if there is a known wiring issue.

Or not being careful about which pins your measuring or jumpering. All it takes is to apply 12v directly to one of the ECU driver outputs and you'll blow it. Apply 12v to the sensor ground and you vaporize the circuit trace inside the ECU.

Since TPSDelta is a derived variable from TPSRaw if you can log TPSRaw then the problem is you don't have TPSDelta enabled for logging and not an ECU hardware problem.

No car works without die if i forced fuel pump from plug but i mean maybe for example car works for about 30 mins or more with this method and i just wants to know maybe this works occured the problem in ECU for blown some driver inside it .

yeah i really will not test that good ecu anymore and today when i want to starts the car again to check something , i just connected pin 7 mpi to ground and car just starts and works fine without die till i turned the ignition key off , plus i just use the wiring diagram to check the connectivities one more time but something is not show in the diagram like when i checked the pin 2 mpi it has connectivity with pin 3 mpi , pin 6 mpi , pin 9 mpi and on ecu side , pin 13 ( i know its normal ) , pin 101 , pin 106 , pin 103 , pin 104 , pin 108 , pin 110 .

yeah maybe but i just remember that apply 12v only to plug on firewall sometimes to force the fuel pump , i think the wiring of this cars have some weird connectivites that maybe its normal and looks abnormal to me .

Since i already enabled TPSdelta and now its go off , i just thought maybe the problem comes from there but i will check it tomorrow to make sure about it . and one more thing , if the starts signal ( white wire pin 109 ) not connected to ecu then error 0042 fuel pump circuit malfunction will occured or its not relating ?
cause after i connected and repaired this wire , i didnt get thats error anymore but still seems car have problem with staying on the fuel pump .
