Hello i am having some trouble reading codes from my 96 Eclipse. I have worked at several shops and don’t seem to find any ODB2 readers that work on my car except for a 4000 dollar Bosch scanner that read very basic codes, 2 years ago.

I'm wondering what type of scanner I should buy. Preferably with some tech that can read live data, and more. Preferably not to expensive either. Live in EU so there is no Autozones that can read out codes for me either :cry:LOL Thanks

Do you know the part number of your ECU. Your profile suggests this is a EU 2G NA with a 4G63 but need to be sure. It's not clear when the EU versions got OBD II support or EOBD and there is little documentation here in the US on the details.

Yes it has obd2, not sure what ecu number would be but i can check and let you know:thumb: but i think they would be pretty close anyways

It looks like an obd2 connector, but it likely isn’t! Early EU models don’t have an obd protocol, they (probably) use mut-ii. It’s possible you can scan it with an openport 2.0 cable, but this is really unknown territory!

The 1996 Eclipse can be a bit tricky because it’s an early OBD-II car, and some of the cheaper generic scanners don’t communicate well with the older Mitsubishi systems.
I’d look into a scanner that specifically supports Mitsubishi OBD-II, not just basic generic codes. Something like an Autel, Launch, Foxwell, or Topdon unit would be a good step up and should give you live data, freeze frame, sensor readings, fuel trims, etc.
If you want something more Mitsubishi-focused, check out MUT-III compatible software/tools or a Denso/Mitsubishi-capable scan tool.
A cheap ELM327 adapter may read basic emissions codes but usually won’t give much useful data on these cars.
Also check the basics: make sure the OBD port has power and the correct pins are present, as some early cars can be picky.
For a 1996 Eclipse, I’d probably avoid the very cheapest readers and spend a little more on a decent handheld scanner. It will pay for itself quickly if you plan on keeping the car
