This is the Build Thread for Daddy's Zoom Car. Reply below.

I've had this car forever- sorry about the empty build thread, I'm just getting the profiles and things set up so I can get serious about tuning it properly. Goal is a 400 or so street car that's even more fun than it was back in the day without getting too fiddly to take care of. (BTDT, I wasn't cut out for hobby racing)

The kids that named it are all grown up, so I've got some resources to finish the project now.

Nice to see another Colorado DSM getting revived. If you aren't already a part of it, join the Rocky Mountain DSM group on facebook. Pretty active over there and already have meet-ups scheduled for the year

Thanks, I’ll look! I’ve still got my membership card from the CoDSM days, but I was never an active racer so I just hung around with the big names and tried to learn from Salmi and Norm and Hal. There’s my name drops for the day! :)

Wow ive not heard those names in awhile. Where are they? I briefly owned Hals 1g dsmlink beta car. It was a serious beater with no 2nd gear.

Unfortunately I don’t know. I lost track of most of the club when we moved from Boulder to Cos and little kids pulled me away from cars for a while.

Last I saw John S he was selling the 2litre and starting a monster Supra build. Fairly certain I saw the 2litre listed for sale again a few years ago but wasn’t in a place where I could pick it up. ):

I probably haven't spoken to them in 20 years. Maybe when digest shut down. Don't remember. I think I bought hals laser early 2000? Don't remember its been so long. I ran up to Denver from okc and back in one day. Drove back with no 2nd gear.

Those were good people, for sure, and the club was smaller and more focused. Fun to hang around with people as everyone was first figuring out the stuff that "everybody knows" now.

While chasing down boost leaks around the injector seals, I figured the injectors are old and maybe a little leaky, so this seemed like a good opportunity to upgrade "while I was in there". (Famous last words...)

I've got new seals and the leaks are gone, yea! Took me a fair amount of time and study to get the mostly idle stable with the new FIC 775 high Z, but I think I'm there.

First big help was the InjBatteryAdj table in the Direct Access tab. It seems that the new injerctors are far more sensitive to battery voltage changes than my low-Z 660s were, so small rpm changes changing alternator output and various electrical draws (radiator fans..) turning on and off were causing problems.

FIC provides values for all their injectors here: FIC website, but the tables don;t cover 1G voltages and fule pressure so I had to do some math to get correct values, and that made a huge difference. New values are:
72.8118
91.7541
121.0885
140.8384
160.7143
190.9456 <- this one is suspicious, I need to check it

The FIC guys suggested -35.3% and zero deadband, but that didn't work very well.

Using the ECMLink's built in calculator and ecmlink data tables I got about a -40% and set the deadband to 300, and the idle is much better. Haven't had a chance to drive it too much yet because of an unrelated problem, more on that later this eve.

Woot! another former CODSM member. I never did get a chance to meet the guys you named, but saw them around the forums a lot. Carl Morris, Ryan Larson, Erik A., Jake Latham all helped me out at some point or another. I'm still displaying a CODSM window sticker that I picked up at one of our meets! Oh, the good ol' days.

I just purchased these FIC 775s for my car, it's a 2g with 6-bolt swap.
Curious how you have been coming on the tune and if you have more firm numbers for global/deadtime/latency considering your voltage fluctuation issues.

The Rocky Mountain DSM Facebook group has been very active of recent, along with meets and cruises. Hope to see you both out there sometime

I happen to have some extra time so might be something to look into. Sorry to hijack the build thread. There's another thread around here to discuss details I'll go find.
