i have most all the supporting mods for a new trubo.
i'm looking to get the evo big 16g turbo w/ 660's
i want to get to the 300-350 hp range with 12sec possibilties

for my budget i can get one or the other, wideband or pocketlogger

would the wideband be enough to tune with? i read a lot about people looking at knock and timing to tune, wich i believe the wideband dosen't give you. are those necessary info to have.

wideband includes display and egt

pocketlogger + pda + egt gauge

both setups will run me about the same price so thats not an issue, just one or the other

please advise

You can use free logging software (mmcd, palm'nstein), get a palm off ebay for $20-$30, cable off ebay for $10-$20 (or make one yourself), so I wouldn't think the costs would be close.

Why not do both? You need to buy an EGT probe with the Zeitronix LCD package, it only includes a harness to connect a probe that you supply. The probe is $65. You could easily find a used palm and cable for the price of the probe, and download free logging software. EGT's aren't all that useful anyway.

Widebands are very nice, but being able to log timing and knock is much more important. If I were you, I would buy both, or just get the palm. If you decide to only get the palm, don't bother with the EGT gauge. Save the money and put it towards a wideband later.

ive seen logger setups on ebay, some run for 140 including pda and all, but they werent from digital tuning inc.

i would prefer to get something from the dealer or at least something that will have some tech support since i'm not all that familar with either system.

i know the pocketlogger would for sure be enough to tune with, but i like the wideband a little more. i just want to get opions on the two and make sure if i went with the wideband that it would be enough to tune with.

A wideband alone will not be enough to tune with, especially on pump fuel. Logging timing is essential. When tuning, your main focus is making sure you have little or no knock. You need to be able to see if your timing is being pulled due to knock, and only a logger will give you this ability. You also need to be able to view your fuel trims in order to tune your idle, and get good gas mileage. Being able to see your AFR without knowing anything else is usesless.

i've done more checking on the DIY cables and this is what i found

http://students.db.erau.edu/~szabafab/stein/

they state that there is no DIY cable for a 2g. what cables are you talking about for $10-20?

doesnt the yeitronix wideband have free logger software... ?

I strongly recommend you go with the logger over the WBO2. You can piece one together for about $150. $125 for the software from www.digitaltuning.com and $15 for a Palm m105.

A WBO2 is nice, but the logger will show you much more information. The following parameters are what I use to tune a 2g:

TPS (inital verification of throttle position)

STFT & LTFT (needed to set up lo throttle maps on an SAFC-II)

Timing (Only correlation to knock available on a 2g)

RPM (obvious one here)

O2 voltage (makes a good guideline)

IAT (Allows you to determine if you are loosing timing because of intake temps >84 degrees)

Coolant Temp (Also a possible timing issue)

Other great features:

Diagnosis of CEL's (saves $80 at the dealer or a trip to AutoZone)

Alarms that trip (audio and visual) for any parameter, for example coolant temp over 215 degrees (might save you a HG)

Excellent customer service.

I just feel that you would be better off with a logger. But that's just my 2cents

Widebands are priceless and I think anyone who's serious about tuning outside of the dyno should have one. But you will need the pocketlogger before anything. If it's seriously one or the other, get the palm. Pick up the ZT-2 down the road if you can.

Thanks for everyones input. I did go with digital tunning. I liked the fact that they have a help forum if needed, plus like stated above, they have good customer service all around. Now I'm just waiting to get it in the mail and start playing.

My decision on buying a turbo changed from a Big 16G to the RS49T so I'll definitely start saving for a wideband later.

Thanks again.
