Zero compression after new head

So my buddy lost compression in his #1 cylinder and decided to buy a different head for it. Once he got it installed he said all four cylinders have zero compression on the compression tester he got from autozone (we will be testing it with a different gauge). Does anybody have some ideas what it could be?

sounds like flat lifters. Crank it over with the injectors unplugged to not flood the engine like 25 times, and let it sit for an hour or so. Come back and re test.

If everything was timed right and the valves werent bent previously, its just the lifters. Happens to me all the time doing cam swaps.
 
He said timing is good, starter cranks but it doesn't fire. It has spark and the injectors are firing
 
Yeah all four cylinders are zero. So just unplug the injectors and crank it over 25 sepearate times? For how long each time?
 
Okay I went over there last night, after trying to start the car it just cranks. We got 45 psi compression in cyl #1 and about 5 psi in cyl #4, nothing in the other two. That was after changing out the cams and the lifters. All 16 lifters are putting out oil, timing is dead on, CPS is good too.

Valves don't appear bent, and didn't when the head was off. He did say he tried cranking it with the timing one tooth off at the very beginning, then redid the timing and got zero compression.

Ideas? Thanks again
 
Okay we are probably going to get the head pulled then, is there anything else that you could think it is while we are down there again?

And you had zero before? what lifters did you put in? new?

If they were zero now they have some, its definitely lifters, did the same thing to me when i threw a set of 264's in the 14b car were building. I swapped out 3 sets of used 1g lifters and didnt stop being goofy until we threw some revised ones in.
 
Go to autozone, buy a tube of assembly lube. Pull the lifters, cut the tip off the tube, stick tip of the tube against the hole in side of lifter, squeeze tube until lube comes out top of lifter. Put lifters back in, try again. If still nothing, pull the head and replace all the bent valves.
 
We used a different set of used 1g lifters. Wouldn't it not make sense that they appear to be putting oil onto the cam lobes that they are working?
 
Too much oil in the lifters can cause no compression too. The valves won't close all the way. Another way to check the valves without pulling the head would be to loosen the cams (so the valves close) and do a cylinder leakdown test.
 
to do a quick check for bent valves.... pull the cams out of the head. set the head on the side. pour water into the runner. if its just a drop or 2 seep out after you count to 10 your good.. if its a little rivver past the valve. then the valve or seat is messed up and you need a valve job
 
I told you not to pull the head. Now you need a new head gasket.

Your lifters have too much oil in them. I have dealt with this issue at least two dozen times because I've been fixing cars professionally for twenty two years. :rolleyes:
 
I have seen the valve keeps not installed correctly cause this problem but it was only one cylinder...

but just a thought....of something to check, while your friend may think the timing is right....ive also had this happen to a friend of mine>> The Exaust Cam has two timing marks, do the dowel pins line up correctly, I would def. double check that, because my friend took about 2 days to figure that out thinking the timing was perfect, and once he did it was a simple 20mins and the car was re-timed and running. The Symptoms sound exactly the same, he was getting a minimal amount of compression out of 2 cylinders and 0 out of the other 2, and occasionally it would sputter and try to start but fall flat on its face.
 
I didn't tell him to pull the head, he just went ahead and did it anyways. The timing was on, the crank sprocket was dead on and the cam gears lined up across all four timing marks. Since the head is off now, I will have him just get the valves out and inspect everything and see what exactly his problem could be.
