I started a welding program about 8 weeks ago. I finished flat stick welding last week and got a chance to get some TIG time in. Monday was the first day and the pictures below are from day two.

I was using a miller CST280 on the lift tig function. 3/32 in carbon steel filler, 2% thoriated tungsten ground to a point, 115 amps on some 1/8 in hot rolled stock and 100% argon @ 20 CFM.

Yeah man, you have skills if that's day two of tig. Keep at it and go get a killer welding job. Making car parts is cool, but you'll make tons of money working for a good company.

Those 8 weeks covered other areas light oxyfuel cutting, blueprint reading and flat stick welding. Today was only my second day holding a torch I still forget to turn the argon on and destroy my tungsten every couple of welds. I may need that tig machine after all

I appreciate the kind words. I am sure different positions, joints and techniques will prove to be more difficult but so far it does seem promising. We shall see.

Only one more day of actual class so this is about as far as I will get with TIG this semester. I was using a miller CST280 on the lift tig function for TIG and the Stick function for the bevel plate.

First I started using some 309 1/8 filler at about 125amps, 2% thoriated tungsten ground to a point, 1/8 in hot rolled stock and 100% argon @ 20 CFM.

For the last part of the day it was 1/8th E70s-6 Carbon Steel filler on flat plates. The amps were slightly increased but all the other settings stayed the same. These flat welds are more difficult to me and this was the best one of the day.

Lastly, this was some 1/2in plates that were beveled 45 degrees with an 1/8in landing ground in the bevels. The plates were then tacked together with an 1/8in gap between the landings.

First I ran the root with 1/8 6010 at about 75amps using the same machine on the 6010 stick function.

The cover passes and cap was done using 1/8 7018 and 125amps. No cleanup so there is still some spatter present and the beads slightly ran together towards the end of the weld but it turned out pretty good.

Thanks for the kind words. I was able to finish stick welding in the flat position early so I have been practicing TIG. Hopefully I will get some more “free” time to try out some tubing but at least I know its not impossible now

I fixed the original posts but those plates that where stick welded where both beveled and ground to an 1/8in landing to create a v groove.

I mean work on tig welding V grooves and do pipes with V grooves your stick weld travel speed looks a little quick though judging by how the "dimes" are more like arrows.

They have a new dynasty 210 out. Lois much better than the syncrowave210.
Or you going to get the 200 or 280?

If money were not an issue I would get the Lincoln aspect

I'm looking at the 200DX, 210DX, and the 280DX. I was hoping to find someone that "knows a guy" or the 'the guy' himself, if you catch my drift. Shop discounts, employee discounts, student discounts, etc... If I can save enough, I'd definitely prefer the 280DX. But if I'm stuck paying Cyberweld's prices, then I don't think I'm interested in spending that much. I have cash in hand and I'm ready to buy, but I'd like to hold out for a great deal.

Let me know I'm in the market for a 200dx the 280 is too much extra money to justify the extra amps and programable memory for me. If it was within a few hundred okay, but over 1000? No thanks..I hardly ever use over 130amp but need more settings; thus the 200, i didn't know there was a 210

Yeah, I doubt I need more than the 200 either, but I figured if I were already spending several grand and I were getting a good deal, why not get the next step up just in case I ever need the power for a job. That being said, I'd be more than happy with a 200DX.

As far as I know, the 200 is being discontinued and replaced by the 210.

I know the Airgas in Lima, OH has done promotions on Miller products for UNOH students, and I know some of them were able to get 30-40% off in the past. I heard this from several of my co-workers who went to UNOH. I figured promotions like this ran all over the country for various groups and reasons... Maybe not though.

When I was in school getting certified, they were giving me 10% off with school id. I still might be able to get the discount.

Here in Georgia, there were no promotions of any kind through the school. The local welding supply does offer 10% to students but that is about it. The National brand name stores didn't openly offer any disount that I am aware of.
