Now before anyone says to do a search, I already have and I'm still a little confused by the whole thing. I know that a Palm m100 PDA is pretty much what everyone uses, but I'm in college and I don't want to spend any extra money that I don't have to. I have a laptop, Dell Inspiron 6000, and I know that there are Palm emulator programs out there for the laptops and a special USB-Serial harness to use. But do I need to have a socketed ECU, even though I have an EPROM ECU? And what other capabilities/advantages, other than datalogging, does it offer? Thanks and try not to get mad at this question.

you don't even need an eprom ecu just for datalogging. The only reason you need an eprom is if you are goin to replace the chip in you ecu with a performance one or if you are goin to DSMLINK. anyway i'm in the same position as you i have a laptop i just need the cable and a program to datalog so hopefully someone will give us some answers

hey spoolin are you sure about pocketlogger running on a laptop? I have always wondered this but hate doing the hackjob programs that most emulators around run into. After looking at pocketloggers website I still see this: http://pocketlogger.com/index.php?pid=faq_pda_comp#winlap they just have a Java tool to view the logs on a PC.

And dsmboostin I have no idea what MMCd stands for but you can find their info here: http://mmcdlogger.sourceforge.net/

There have been attempts to run MMCD through a laptop but none of them were successful as far as I know. The problem is that there is no way to let the palm emulator program talk with the serial port on your laptop.

So there is no programs out there that you can use only your laptop and no palm pilot with? I just really don't want to buy a palm pilot and I don't really like the way they look in the car.

You only haave to have it in while you're logging. it's not like you do this all the time.

I got my setup (cable and logger) for $35. It's not a huge investment. Just spy ebay for any decent palm (preferably running OS 3.5 or later and buy it. You can upgrade the OS on most, but palm doesn't provide the updates any more. I found the update for my Palm V on someones website.

Yeah i know but i really don't wanna buy one when all i really need is a cable and some software.
