I finally bought a 1997 mitsubishi eclipse gsx..for $3500 the only problem i have is its an automatic.. I would love to change this to a manual.. where can i buy a 5 speed gsx tranny from? and how much should i b charged to have someone else to the conversion..because i am way too busy to do it myself.. so if i buy the tranny and give it to a shop how much should they charge..and is it a rough process?

I also will be turbo'n my 97 gs in about 2 months..
thanks for any feedback

First of all, if you have a gsx I dont know why you would spend money turboing a GS. Use that money to make a badass gsx and keep your gs stock for daily driver with good gas mileage.

Anyways, I would think it would be hard to find a shop knowledgable enough that would want to do that job. Its a good amount of work and its going to be pretty expensive. How much money do you have to work with? What are the goals of your build? You can get a tranny from any number of places, classified section of this forum, TRE, Shep, online, junkyard, maybe order one from mitsubishi. Research it for prices.

to have a shop do it its going to cost alot of money, also you need to have a shop like ams do somethin like that chances are the dealer or the mom and pop repair shop down the road are not going to know what all is needed in the swap

Congrats on your newly purchased GSX. Just leave it automatic and you could purchase a shift kit. Enjoy your turbo car

NOOO. I used to have a 97 gsx automatic. When I first got it I was sooo excited but was thinking the same thing you are. After a month I loved that car so much there was noo way I could part with it. There the funnest when there bone stock because just the small little things you can do make such a diffrence in performance.

Keep GS non turbo and use it as a RELIABLE daily driver because after you start moding the GSX it wont be reliable at all :). GSX tranny in good condition $400-500 not shipped. You will need a clutch, flywheel, tranny shifter cables and other little things.

When you do a auto to manual swap on the AWD its not just a simple transmission swap. You will also need to swap to the manual transfer case and the manual rear end. The auto and manual cars have difenent gearing and that is the reason for needing to swap to the correct rear end for the transmission.

Here is a couple of threads you should search through.

I agree with the 2geclipse565, even if it's an automatic it's not really that bad, you don't lose boost pressure when the car shifts!! Of course I can't say much, I love my 5 spd :(!! But definately leave the GS stock and concentrate the money on the GSX, you're going to need it. It's not cheap LOL!! And make sure to keep up the regular maintenance, check the tech section and make sure to follow the advice before you start upgrading!! Welcome to the 4g63 world^^

Shoot, leave it auto. I totally dig my 5 speed, but if you get a shift kit for it auto's can be nice as hell.

LOL ok forget the gs.. ok i lied.. i bought a 97 gsx auto for my old man and he wants to switch it to a manual..im stuck with the gs but will soon purchase the g37 so it will be sitting up in the garage waiting for sister to come back home... two questions (What is a shift kit?) (Rear Transfer Case?) also since Christmas hasn't came yet my dad doesn't know about the car, i was wondering the first upgrade to be done should be what..of course maintenance..i have performance plugs and everything already put on..
thanks

well, congrats.Swaping it is very expensive if your paying someone to do it. If I was to have someone do it I would have someone thats local and expirienced in dsms do it. But again, what are youre guys plans for the car? If it's just gonna be a DD then just keep it auto, or if your gonna mod it a little get a shift kit. If your looking for a canyon carver though, your gonna want the 5 speed. If your gonna 1/4 mile it, just keep it auto. whatever you decide to do, let us know. And post up some pics dammit!!!

Yea dude. I love my TSi AWD automatic. When I got her, I was planning to do the swap as well. But since then I discovered a whole new love for the automatic transmission. Unless you’re racing a road course, I believe there is no reason to change it over. EVERY shift is strong and hard. IMO, far better than any 5 speed can shift. (Don’t get me wrong, I love a good m/t :shhh:) But it is your car... (Or whatever, lying is bad :nono: )

Good luck if you decide to do the swap (or have it done)!

Just remember my motto: "Never lift to shift" (I just have to represent the a/t a little, ya know!)
