Ok, this is starting to piss me off.
I just bought my 90 GSX in mint body condition and the motor didnt look bad at all.
When i bought it, it had a 3" exhaust and downpipe, but no cat because it rotted away.
After driving it twice, I changed back to complete stock, for emissions and money.
When I went to change it, there was a huge leak of oil on my driver side, while the passenger side was clean.
I thought nothing of it until 5 min later when I opened the spark plug cover to check how my spark plugs and wires were.
There was a good 1/2-1 inch of oil in the spark plug bay area. So I soaked it all up, and bought a new Valve cover gasket.
Now, out of nowhere, its REALLY tough to go from first to second gear, I have to use about 3/4 of my strength, maybe even more.
Also, it grinds gears too. Which is also pissing me off.
Not to mention I believe I may have a crack in my exhaust manifold because it sounds REALLY loud and smoke comes from that area.
Anyone help me?!?! PLEASE!!!

It seems as if you have several problems here. I'll let others give their opinions, but I own a 90 Talon TSi AWD and historically (so I've been told), synco rings go bad on transmissions over 100,000 (it can happen with less miles too). If you have bad synco rings, shifting will be hard and with grinding noises. You can help it by accelerating slowly and sometimes double clutching, but that's only going to work for a short period of time. Essentially, you want to get that replace ASAP and if you can help it, not drive the car. Hopefully this isn't your daily driver right now and you get leave it parked while you get it repaired. Replacing syncro rings, requires transmission overhaul. Do a search on the forums for syncro rings and you'll come up with lots of results. Of course, it can be a clutch or other tranmission issue, but 90 DSM's are infamously known for their syncro rings and grinding noises. :-/

As for your oil leak, I would further investigate the actual cause and location of the leak. (ie, all gaskets, including oil pan, head gasket, etc). and replace part/gaskets if needed.

I hope this helps. Keep us posted.

Gabriel

P.S. Get a new manifold....you can find them on ebay cheap or a junk yard.
