Yes, well, a little over a week ago, I wreck my 1997 GSX. I have been hoping and praying that the damage wasn't too extensive, but I got word today that the body shop the insurance company sent it to, has said that since the frame is bent in two places, that it should bo totalled, instead of repaired.

I bought the car, about 8 months ago. Father's Day, last year. The dealer wanted $11000 (12, after tax and title, etc). Because I was 17 then, I had my parents with me, and we managed to get $1000 knocked off, due to the fact that it had some minor dents (which the dealership had a guy come out and repair), and that the tires were low on tread. I put down $6000, and with the help of my parents, got a loan for the other $5000+. A little while after that, I had to have the clutch replaced (Cost me $1400). I started researching the upgrade paths for a GSX, and went out and bought a K&N FIPK FilterCharger. After that, I had new spark plugs put in, aswell as spark plug wires, and gave the car a tune up. Just changed the oil, and had brand new Kuhmo Ecsta 225/50R17s put on the stock GSX rims.
My main question is, is after the adjuster from my insurance company looks at it, and most likely (Which I'm still praying won't happen), decides the car needs to be totalled, how much should I be arguing for? Also, since they give you the option to keep it, or let it be totalled, what if I were to keep it, and either part it out, or sell it whole. How much would I be able to ask for it? The engine only has around 76000 miles on it. Always been serviced. It's originally from Texas, from what I can tell of the paperwork.

if it's going to be totalled by the insurance company, you basically get what they give you. they don't care that the tires are new, clutch is new, etc. why are you hoping that they don't total it? if the frame is bent in two places it'll never drive the same, and it looks like it's damaged pretty extensively.

you can always just let them total it, and then buy it back for a couple hundred dollars.

im really sorry to see that happen to you. evertime i see a wrecked dsm it reminds me when i crashed mine. i still cant forget the experience. but since the car is a unibody frame and it is bent in two places it would be best if you just accept that it will be totaled. like stated above it will never be the same. obviously you will loose your money on your recent investments, but thats just something you have to deal with. just be happy you are able to walk away from this. I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK in whatever your decisions may be. :thumb:

Wow. How the hell did you manage that? (tell us teh story of how the accident happened please). Anyway, that really sucks. I'd say just let them total it, and if you can, buy it back for cheap(if you have the cash on hand of course), then part it out, and buy a new vehicle, how much did you still owe on it?

Also like said above, be glad you did walk away from it.

Well, it was just a little bit of stupidity... Just a little. I was coming home from work, driving down this empty street that I always take, and decided to just step on the gas and open the car up. Well, right before where I wrecked, the road goes into a slight incline, and a curve to the left. Other times I have done this same thing, just opened the car up on the straightaway, and I usually slow down before I get to that curve. This time, I don't know why, but I didn't. I took the turn going... (Honestly, I don't even remember looking at the speedometer), started to slide to the left, almost like a drift. or power slide. I turned the wheel right to correct my path, and I guess I overcorrected. Went over the curb to my right, hit a street sign, plowed right over it, then went through about 20 feet of hedges, and chainlink fence (As you can see in the pictures). I'm not exactly sure what happened, after I swirved to the right. Everything kind of blurred, until the car came to a stop. I remember hearing my driver's side window shattering, and seeing little pieces of glass flying in. The window flew out though. I later saw the tinted mass laying on the ground, on the passanger side of the car. As soon as the car stopped, it was as if I had just parked somewhere. I pulled the parking brake, pulled my key out of the ignition, and got out. My girlfriend was driving behind me, and I was already out surveying the damage by the time she came over the incline.

EDIT: Well, considering I only made $1000 of the $6000 down payment, I owe about $5000 to my parents for that. About $3-4000 on the loan, and I am still paying for that clutch... So, I am about $8000 in debt. :thumb:

8 Grand, quite a pretty penny. OUCH.

Ah, little mistakes can bring big consequences. Good to hear you're alright.

First thing my dad said to me, when him and my mom arrived was "Take those speakers out, and take that plate off." Speakers referring to the subwoofers I had just installed 2 days earlier. Actually, that's the only thing he said to me.. :(

Damn dude that sucks ass! I noticed you are from Boca, I'm going to school at FAU, Where abouts in boca did you pull that?

I was driving on Spanish River. The speed limit is in fact 35. I was doing well over that... :thumbdown

Rough one guy.

I wouldn't have thought twice about, if it was going to be TL'ed or not, that damage is ugly.

Just wait and see what you get for it, and buy another one. Just make sure you don't drive it stupid again :thumb:

The damage may be ugly, but I loved that damn car. I think that's probably what I'll do though. Let them total it, pay off what I owe, then try and find another miracle deal.

This is best way to do...Then part out the car and get more money back to pay off the debt.

im sorry to say you crashed because of those taillights ;)

Yeah, just take the insurance check and use it to pay off the loan. Then go out and get another DSM. This is what i did when i wrecked my Talon and now i got my new baby!
I didn't have to pay anything to get the car back either. Just had it towed to my house :thumb:

I have another question. Everyone is saying that because of the frame being bent, I should just take the insurance. Well, I was reading through another thread in these forums (Bent Frame), and in it one person posted that DSMs don't have frames, we have unibodies. Then another person posted that even though we have unibodies, there is still a subframe, and that if it was bent, it would either have to be bent back, or replaced.
What are the pros and cons to bending the frame back? All I hear are people saying the car will never be the same, but how many of you people have had prior experience with bent frames?
What if I were to replace this subframe? How much would that cost?

the cost of fixing the entire car would come close to if not exceed the money you still owe. its not worth it, find a new one.

and yes i have experience with totaling a car and my best friends bro went through fixing a bent frame on a supra.

I meant if the insurance were to pay for it. As long as the repairs don't exceed 80% of the value of the car, they will repair it.

EDIT: And hear-say from your best friend's brother is not what I meant by experience. I mean personal experience. Preferably with a DSM, at that... :thumb: I want to know if anyone who has had their frame bent back could feel a difference in the car. In the ride, handling, etc.

i doubt that will happen

you need a lot of new parts, and those pics dont show everything.

Not sure how much you will get back as the blue book on the car is only around $6,700-7,200

You may have to do some fighting w/ the insurance company, never settle on their first offer.

You wonder why insurance rates are so high for younger people like me when you have guys "opening up" their cars and roads for no reason and throwing them into a ditch.... hate to be the bad guy here but I dont really feel sorry for you.
