would this make a car go out of time

I somehow managed to break loose the bolt in the center of the crank pulley. It did not come off so i just retightened it. Would that mess my timing up to where my valves would hit?
 
Yes it very well could have, if you havnt done your timing belt lately, now would be a good time:thumb:
 
Actually no. The crank pulley is for running the accessories and it can't get out of time. The crank sprocket is what is actually connected to the timing belt and if something goes wrong there it could cause you're timing to mess up. Is it possibly you're talking about your sprocket or are you sure it's your pulley?

Mostly true but kind of depend on how it was broken loose, turning the crank CCW can result in change of the belt tension. Turn the engine by hand up to 6 turns and line up all the marks at TDC after you properly torque the center bolt to spec before starting the car.
 
i am talking about the pulley (which should be the first thing the bolt holds on)
I will try that oldman, but i can only turn the motor so far before it gets too hard to turn.
I just got done installing a new transmission and when i go to start it it makes a horriable metal sound, which is why i thought it might be out of time, hitting the valves, either that or i need to pull my tranny back off and see what else could be causing that noise
 
There seems to be some confusions here. There are two pullies here.

1. The outer pulley or the crank pulley which drives the accessary belts.

2. The inner pulley or the crank sprocket drives the timing belt but you can't see it because it's inside the lower timing belt cover.

The crank pulley is not hold in place by the center bolt, you only need to remove the four 12mm bolts to remove the crank pulley. The center bolt only needs removal when trying to get to the crank sprocket. How far did you turn the crank CCW? You will encounter more resistance when ever you approach the end of a compression stroke on any given cylinder but you should have to force the issue. If it's that difficult, make sure the belt did not slip and valves are not hitting the pistons.

I guess I was just assuming that the pulley didn't move. Whenever I loosen mine, I brace it or have my dad try to hold on to it or something so it stays still so I can break the bolts loose. But I guess that isn't always the case though.

I mean, I guess the closest thing I can say it sounded like when my valves hit was like if you stuck a card in the spokes of your bike and it makes that rapid sorta clicking noise, just it would be much louder and sound like metal hitting obviously. Sorry for all the questions, it's just the more we know, the better we can help you out.

Who said i took the outter pulley off? Just the center nut broke loose and i retightend it. That happened during my tranny install. Now when i try to start the car...It gives me the normal sound of the engine turning over but then a metal sound thrown in there on ever orther noise. I am going to pull my tranny off tonight and try to turn the motor over and see if it will go, If it does them there is something messed up with they way i put the clutch/flywheel on, or the way they mate up to the imput shaft.

Because......there is not a center nut on the outer pulley. Oldman already explained this but the crank pulley has four 12 mm bolts, they basically make up a square. The crank sprocket is what is being held by the center bolt. You really don't need to take off the pulley to get to the sprocket bolt, so I shouldn't have just assumed that the pulley came off, just try not to refer to the "center bolt" on the outer pulley cause there is no such thing. I finally understand what you're getting at though and my only guess is that you could make sure everything is lined up to their appropriate timing marks and then do a compression test to make sure the valves are sealing up properly.

Why don't you pull all of the pulley's and cover, and just check to see if everything is lined up. Since the engine is out of the car, you can't ask for a better time to check that and then replace the belt.
 
haha actually that is not my motor, i am just using that for a visual deminstration.
But by breaking that nut loose ( not removing it) could that cause me to go out of time?
 
Well first of all, sorry for all of the miscommunication, mostly on my part. It's hard over the internet to know exactly what's going on. Now down to business. Like oldman said, I guess it's possible that if you loosened it, it could change the tension on the actually belt causing it to be prone to popping off or jumping a tooth. I remember when I was doing my t-belt, when you are turning that center bolt clockwise to get everything lined up, belt tension is good, but if you try to rotate it backwards (ccwise) then I believe that one side does loosen up a little bit, now I don't remember it being a whole lot, but it is some which could lead to the belt juming a tooth. It's really hard to say. I suggest doing a compression test to see if your valves are sealing correctly, also, I know it will be a huge pain, but you might want to look into seeing if all of your marks are lined up correctly. I hope that helps. Let us know anything you find out and how things go.
