My car started to make high-pitch, squealing, metallic noise when moving. The engine can be shut off completely, and the noise persists even if I just push it forward while it's in neutral. I lifted the front of the car up and tried to shake the wheel, but it kept pretty solid, so I don't think it's a bearing. The noise started to appear when I did left turn and disappeared after I went back on straight. After a while it started to persist all the time, but changed the pitch when I applied brakes. One time it showed up only while braking, but then it went back full time/all time again. All that happened in 15 minutes or so.

I tried to record it, but the high pitch sound disappeared from the record, and I couldn't find anything on forums after searching. Has anyone seen something similar? Do the worn brake pads squeal all the time or just when braking on DSM?

And can anyone please recommend what type of brake pads I should look for replacement. Ceramic, metallic...?

It is probably worn pads. Most pad companys put a little metal finger on the brake pads to make noise to alert the driver its time to replace. In most cases it will squeal all the time because the pads always sit on the rotors, just with no pressure behind them untill you press the brake pedal. It only takes a few min. to check them out. Pop the wheel off and take a close look at the brakes. I use KVR carbon-kevlar brake pads, They work great, low noise, low brake dust and they last a while!

that or a worped rotor.

K, lets actually think here. There is no indication of a warped rotor here. He may have one, but he has not given us any reason to believe there is. lets not jump to conclusions too quickly now.

As far as pads go, the more bite, the more dust, and usually more noise. Not always true though. I'm running Metal Masters and they offer a GREAT deal more bite over stock while not being noisy, or at least I never noticed. However, they put off A LOT of dust. But I don't care about dust, because that's what soap and water are for!:thumb:
