Will a 5spd Eprom ECU work in an Auto?

I have the 450cc injectors just waiting to be installed. I know a non-eprom will work fine, but I am not sure about the eprom version. Just want some verification before I pick one up..

Any 91-94 5 speed ECU will work in an auto car. Wether or not it is E-prom does not matter. I have had 5 speed ECU in my car now for almost 1 year with no problems. I just wish I could find an Eprom ECU at a reasonable price to use next.

In the 1G's there is no differance that I know of in a FWD vs AWD ECU. And the only differance in a 2G is there is no speed limiter on the AWD ECU.

AWD or FWD don't affect ECU use. If you have an AUTOMATIC car the TCU will control the transmission not the ECU. The most important thing you need to know about the replacement ECU is to make sure it was from a TURBO 5 speed car for the 450cc injector fuel maps. The Automatic ECU's have fuel maps for 390cc injectors otherwise they process all data the same.

so if I were to get a 5 spd turbo ECM it would cause problems for my automatic with the stock injectors right?

If you don't have any form of fuel control, like an SAFC. Then the next best bet would be to do the "FREE MODS" from the VFAQ for hacking the air can. That way your motor will pull more un-metered air to make up for the larger injector fuel maps. Chances are good that the ECU will compensate using the O2 readings and adjust the short, mid and long term fuel trims to get the car running normally.

I have a 94 es 2.0 n/t I just pulled the ecu out the other day to check the caps and was suprised to see a eprom on the board (caps good). Currently i'm in the middle of a turbo conversion. I'm curious since I have a n/t eprom ecu can you install a eprom upgrade chip for a turbo ecu and "viola Instant turbo ecu"? I understand that the programming is on the eprom. My idea would work I supose if the circuitry were the same. Any Ideas? Any one with pcb pics of a 94 turbo eprom ecu?

Nope, There are no "viola Instant turbo ecu eprom's" for non- turbos........

Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't know how many times I must emphazise this........... If you have a NON-TURBO, don't bother converting to a TURBO. Save the hassle and just buy a turbo car.........it will be a lot less aggrevation........

you can't just slap a turbo in a non-turbo and that's it........ you need to install oi/coolant lines, new injectors,maybe new engine,manifold,o2 sensor housing,new o2,new maf,intercooler, piping, new tb, new ecu, and keep going on etc............

just buy a turbo.........

The ECUs use the same PCB but have different jumpers, different parts in the injector circuit, missing a few drivers for the BSC and MAF reset circuits, knock board, and code in the EPROM. If your '94 NA has a knock sensor your part of the way. Otherwise all these parts need to be sourced from a dead turbo ECU to convert the NA one.

It's many hours of work to swap the parts over and reconfigure the ECU and not usually cost effective when compared to buying a turbo ECU.

And just imagine, all this work just to convert to a Turbo ECU, image converting an entire car from N/T to Turbo....... :thumbdown

Too much: Work , Money , Time , Aggrevation , Cursing , etc..........

JUST BUY A TURBO DSM.

I bought my 92 tsi for $3,000. Four years later, still going on strong..............

I agree. buy a turbo car. and if you are really into wanting to do the work yourself buy a non running turbo car. I picked mine up for 75$. 91 TSI AWD. 300$ later running fine(till i hit some bad luck) all i had to buy was a new head and timing belt components and a used 14b turbo.
