will 97 cams work with a 95-96 cas sensor?

a guy is selling a 95 talon tsi and he says he put a motor from a 97 in it but the cas sensor wont work with 97 cams. i was wondering how true this is. thank you
sean

that is partially correct. the BIG difference is where the CAS mounts from the 2ga and 2gb motors. on the 2ga it is located on the backsideo f the head, and the 2gb (97+) the CAS is mounted to the left of the head and the sensing cylinder is bolted to the intake camshaft.

you will either have to use the 2ga setup or the 2gb setup (along with the corresponding intake cam) with the motorswap. (you DO know the only difference is what we're talking about right?)

The 95 cas will work with 97 cams, it is just the cam gears from a 97 that wont work on the 95 without extra work.

curious.. what type of extra work are you talking about? I currently have a 96 head with 97 cams, gears, and CAS.. from the side, my cam gears look off center when in rotation.. is that what you're talking about? how they don't seat right?

The extra work you must do when installing 97 cam gears on a 95 is rewire the 95CAS to run a 97 style that is it. The cam gears should bolt up the same and stuff though.

oh ok that's what I thought.. the reason I ask is because my cam gears look offcenter when in rotation and make a bit of a whirrrrrring sound.. thanks

There really isn't much that can stop a cam gear from seating properly unless the gear is bent. I had that problem once, UPS shipped me a head and from the looks of the package, they must have dropped it out the back of their truck on the highway.

My exhaust cam gear was shattered, so after building up the head, I bolted it up. My intake cam gear was loping up and down/side to side much like you are talking about. I should have checked it before I put it on as it was pretty bent out of shape once you saw it spinning. Another replacement gear was the solution.
