Vancouver,
So Guys I just picked up my 98 GST with 98kmiles on it. When i got it i noticed it was smoking alot of white smoke. got it home and went to it in the morning. It does not smoke when driving at highway speeds even at high boost and accel almost to the floor. it seems to smoke white.... but its a little greyish... also if im driving down the highway and floor it and it downshift (auto) i get a small puff of black/brown (think thats something else)

When I started it up in the morning it doesnt smoke. I let it warm up for a few min and then give it some gas and the smoke comes pouring out. once again white smoke. and it goes like that for a long time
lots of water exits the exhaust pipe but i dont see it being condensation..... i made sure its not steam but smoke. it has a gray tint to it but looks white first glance. What can it be. ? there is no bubbles in the coolant when its smoking and no milky oil or anything which should say the headand gasket is fine.... i pulled the lower IC pipe off to look for oil and not a single drop. and im just wondering if it was oil from valve seals or rings wouldnt it be more blueish and consistant while driving at highway speeds? and not only when idling and reving... seems to stop under load reving while parked will produce smoke too. im going to change the oil and spark plugs and stuff tommorow and see whats going on. u think its running rich maybe?

im lost here.
Also what viscosity of oil should i use. i plan to buy mobile 1 synthetic but dont know whether to get 10-40 or 10-30 or 20-50..? also i will get the lucas stabilizer see what it can be.? is there coolant running to the turbo at all? im thinking that might be a way for it to get into the exhaust if it is burning water/coolant.

thanks in advance guys.

white smoke means the car is burning coolant, could be a blown headgasket, or bad coolant seals in the turbo. Keep an eye on your coolant level --- generally unless the car is smoking A LOt you will be unable to see it on the highway because of how fast your going. The puff of black smoke is normal.

To further check the condition of the headgasket if infact you are losing coolant -- run a compression test.

http://www.dsmgrrrl.com/FAQs/compression.htm

I run 10-40 in my car always. If your in a colder climate a thinner oil (10-30) might be useful.

Check the turbo for shaft play just to rule out the turbo going. If it's the stock turbo, you're probably at about the point where it starts to crap out. Also, the conditions under which it smokes are similar to what I experienced before my T25 died.

i have the same problem. check for oil in the intake. there's oil in my intake so prob the turbo seals are giving way.

i looked inside the bottom intercooler pipe and no oil came out. at all..... can the turbo be cracked ... how do i test the shaft play or to rule out the turbo?

Take the intake hose off of the turbo (the one that goes to your air filter) inside the hole of the turbo is a shaft right in the middle, wiggle it up down, side to side, and in and out. report back with your findings.

im 90% sure that it is your turbo. i had the same exact problem. just get a 14b off ebay or something to fix it, more power plus no smoke :thumb:

ok i just checked the turbo shaft and dont see any shaft play at all when i have it parked and rev it a little bit and let go it sounds like whirrling from the turbo
is it possible to be cracked? how would i check. i want to be sure before i get a new turbo

ok the turbo cooled down a bit now and i am able to get a better grip on it. it seems to move side to side and in and out but im not sure how much its supposed to move....

ok this is an auto by the way does that make a difference? is the turbo different? i wouldnt mind having an excuse to upgrade the turbo but i want to make sure that its the problem and i dont get stuck changing it and still having this

afer letting it run for a while there is a big puddle out of the exhuast which makes me believe its coolant. what ways does the coolant have to get into the turbo? im tihnking thats th eproblem here. I hope heh Please help me diagnose the turbo

???? im gonna pull the turbo today and post some pics

ok, the auto turbo is the same as a manual on 2G's.

I dont think pulling the turbo is the answer, unless your going to replace it. What you need to do is a compression test which I stated before. And if that turns out good or bad a leakdown test. What this will do is eliminate any possibility other then the turbo. So if both these test's are perfect then it IS the turbo. Both of these test's are easier to do then pulling the turbo.

i just put in castrol syntec and still does it....... gonna do leakdown and compression test tonight and post results

compression test was perfect 190 accross the board on all cylinders..... this tells me that the engine is in good shape.... head gasket should be fine???? valve seals fine? and rings are fine too?????? it just keeps pointing more towards turbo :)

let me know your thoughts

should I do a leakdown test still or this sufficient to say its the turbo?

190 i believe is actually abobe spec for our motors. Nothing major just means you have some carbonation built up in your cylinders. If your getting puddles/ alot of smoke out the back and have good compression like that -- I would say its time to upgrade your turbo :)

yeh i hope its the case :) ive been eyeing a evo 16g :)
Now some people tell me the t25 is only oil cooled and some are saying it is oil/coolant... i thought there is coolant lines going to it but can someone clarify?
