Why does DSMtuners disapprove of street racing?

has anybody noticed the lack of skid marks from the brakes of the crown vic, I don't know about you but If the road is filled with smoke I start to slow down. Looking at the background and bend in the road I would guess 25-35 mikes an hour did this person hit the gas instead of break.

IF the government would only open up a track that was open till like 1 or 2 at night then none of this would happen

Yeah, as if our tax dollars aren't wasted enough by that bloated, thoughtless entity.

This country was intended to be capitalist. Find some financiers/backers and see what you can do.

Nothing should be handed out for free in this land.

Cecil County Dragway opens up next week if the weather is right. All the tracks in Maryland will open the first weekend in March no matter what. During the course of the year, tracks around here are open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This couldn't wait for one more week?? Was it worth 8 lives? Yes, maybe the car that did the killing wasn't "involved" in the actual street race, but would people have been standing on the highway had there not been a street race happening at the time? I know some people are saying, "why don't they have tracks open at 1-2 am??" It's all about money and real estate. Some track owners aren't allowed to operate after 11 because of houses ("noise pollution") that were built around the track YEARS AFTER the track was built there. Maryland International Raceway has Midnight Madness EACH AND EVERY FRIDAY of the season, with eliminations STARTING at 10 pm, with the gates not closing until the conclusion of the event. Oh, by the way, MIR is a whopping 20-25 minutes away from where this stupid incident occurred. Seems to me that the track owners are doing as much as they can to support their local racers. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SENSELESS LOSS OF LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I don't know about there, but here you are supposed to yield for pedestrians no matter what. :notgood: Yeah I am sure the people wouldn't have been there if there wasn't a race, but that still doesn't excuse someone killing 7 people. The article said that the car didn't stop for 150-200ft, and one spectator ended up inside of the car. It is obvious that something is a little fishy about the drivers condition. I don't know of any car that takes over 150ft to come to a stop from any legal speed limit in the USA. Also the article says that it is unknown if the driver even had his headlights on.

I agree, there's something missing from that article. Who drives in the middle of the night down an isolated highway with possibly their headlights off? More than likely, since it is an isolate highway, that person was probably not driving at legal speed limits.

I noted that they didn't mention anything about the Crown Vic driver or about other vehicles. How did all those people get there. I'm assuming there were quite a few other cars lined up, probably with their lights on also assuming these people were not standing around in total darkness.

There's no telling how far it would have taken the car to stop after going off the road and into the grass. Those vic's are heavy cars and if it was an ex-patrol car then it would probably have a little extra weight in the chassis.

The headlines really tell the story of selling a hot topic to the masses and playing off the stereotypes shown in movies and pop culture. If this were the early 70's they would show some kids standing around in black leather jackets with motorcycles even if it was a bunch of jocks racing pickups.

Street racing will never go away because we'll always have people whose adrenaline will overpower their common sense. Forget trying to come up with a plan to eliminate it. Start thinking of ways to do your part to change the perception about our cars and our hobby.

The #1 thing you can do is to support your local track by using it and getting your friends and other DSMers in your area to use it. Try and organize regular local DSM club events that focus on going to the track. Try and spread the word about it to others. And fight the urge to street race whenever you can. I feel as if I have a responsibility to my community (you guys) to not street race. That's what helps me most.

If you don't have a local track (one that is less than 2 hours away from you), get involved with other local car groups and the local law enforcement to come up with a solution. The point is you have to be part of the solution and not the problem. It all starts with YOU. If you don't take responsibility for your community nobody else will either. If you add to the problem you're just as responsible as any driver who ends up killing innocent people. Keep that in mind next time you put others' lives in jeopardy.

There's not very much street racing that goes on around here. Mostly because everyone that has a fast import, dsm or other wise hangs out in the same group of about 50 or so> Everyone knows who's faster than who. We all know who bought what before they even get it on their car.LOL We also have a track that has a test and tune every Friday night until midnight. They also have bracket races every Saturday night. 4th Friday every month they have what they call "Midnight Mayhem" which starts at midnight and goes until 4am. After midnight it's free to run. Every other month they sponsor a Car Wars where they have prize money for different classes. I think this help a lot about keeping the street racing down in my area.

My next mod will be new paint, deletion of the turbo wing and removal of the turbo and AWD badges. I know how my stroker Talon runs and don’t need to excite every Mustang and Dodge Ram driver on the road.

In Puerto Rico there are 5 drag racing tracks opened mon tue wed thur fri sat and some sun. There is another race track in the build, the island is 100 X 35 miles no mater were you are in the country you are less than 1 hr from a race track near you

theres street racing here every day and every night even when there are racing programs at race tracks just $5 inscription the whole night for street car testing....

Likely he will be charged with manslaughter with several offenses to top it off. Even though people standing in a highway is probably not the best place for them to be, charging through an area with low visibility and killing so many people will likely not be taken lightly.

In the least, the kid will require a great deal of psychological evaluations to verify that he's not going to snap after having someone go through his windshield. If he wasn't messed up before, he will be now.

Some of the local law enforcement have a program here where you get to race the cops at the track and have a good time to promote going to the strip instead of street racing. It seems to have generated some attention, so we'll see how it goes after the track opens up/

The government is not in a position to do such things. But the track owners are.

My local track does an event called Midnight Madness every other weekend. It's basically heads up drag racing from 10 PM to 2 AM. It's mostly street driven cars. I like it because it's a great opportunity to use it as a test-n-tune and most people don't have to take off work earily to make it up there.

But, it's also a good example of a race track's effort to get more people off the streets and onto the track. I wish other race tracks would follow suit.

I disapprove of street racing because I have 3 kids under the age of 9.. I was wild and crazy until they came along. Last year The Hot Rod Power tour came to my home town of Evansville Indiana and some jerk in a blown 68 Camaro was racing a Porsche and about slammed into the back of my mini van full of my kids. Slid right up to me.. I jumped out of the van in the middle of the street and went to his window and went ballistic on him. I happen to be bipolar and im actually afraid I will end up in prison if someone hurts my kids. I was ready to pull this guy out of his window by his hair, But his 5 point harness and the look in his eyes kept that from happening. He knew he f'd up, he was extremely sorry and new he was wrong.. I used to be him basically when I was younger.. Im only 33 now but when you see a few dead bodys in car crashes like I have and have kids to protect you grow up fast when it comes to street racing. There is just no need to do it. My 2cents..

I agree, as of late I have been more and more about going to the track to race. Mostly because there's no excuse's in my book at the drag strip. Especially if you trailer the car there. So there's less BS, it's legal and well in many ways more fun. Add to that 6 months ago I became a father and have been doing a lot of growing up.

With that said I am not saying I have not ever raced on the highway. But I was a lot more smart about it than some are. Hell I even topped out my first DSM when I was 16.

But you know what. I waited untill 3am went out to a very quiet long 2 1/2 mile section in the middle of no where with no intersections or on ramps/exit ramps. Drove up and down it looking for cops, debris etc. checked tire pressure. O look a car... wait 5min so I know he is out of the way and then I went and made my "pass"

If everyone that street races did this I don't think there would be near as big of a stink about it. But the problem is idiots race in the middle of town, though intersections and on private property. (warehouse parking lots) etc. I have watched some of the most retarded shit around ATL where people were racing in sports where they could barely top out there 2nd gear before they had to slam on the breaks or hit a brick wall. Just retarded shit.

I am not saying it's ok, but for god's sake if your going to do something illegal don't be that dumb about it.

But yes, best option is to take it to the track and I encourage more to do so.

Funny how completely stupid this stuff looks once you have kids, doesn't it?

I love it when someone suggests that just because a track is located more than 1 hour away from them they'd rather just put my family's lives at risk by racing on the freeway or a city street. I don't care if you risk your own life but when you put my 11 month old daughter's life at risk with your stupidity then I have a problem with it. And I hope you lose your car, your freedom, and everything you own, if not more. You don't deserve it if you can't respect the possible loss of life you might end up being responsible for.

Take it to the track. There's absolutely no good excuse not to. And I've heard many.
