Hey guys. I have a little problem. Im currently rebuilding my evo and my friend let me borrow his 92 talon tsi until im done. All of a sudden at idle when i start it up in the AM it just starts blowing white smoke out of the exhaust bad and of course all the way to work its like a 007 smoke trail. Anyway i pulled the IC piping off of the TB and and then started the car and let it idle. The car would still blow out White smoke whithout the IC pipe connected. Another problem is there was oil dripping out of the IC pipe i disconected but he is aware that the turbo needs to be rebuilt so that is no big deal. Anyway i did a compression test and it was 140-145 all the way across. Is that correct for a 92 talon? I went out and bought a head gasket and am planning to change that for him this weekened since it has 120K miles and nothing has ever been touched in the engine. So to get down to it i have a couple questions.

1) Do you think that by me changing the head gasket will be the root of the problem of white smoke?

2) Could it be that the turbo seals finally went out totally and it is now blowing coolant and oil through the turbo and out the exhaust?

3) Do you guys know what the torque specs are for the head bolts?

Any sugestions would be greatly appriciated.

Thanx
Chris

I think this is most likely the problem because you said . . .

I will say that I have more deviation across my cylinders that 5 psi when i did my compresion check after a head gasket replacement i did recently with new ARP head studs.

I'd look at rebuilding the turbo instead of taking the time to pull the head gasket... unless you want to do something like put a metal head gasket or head studs in or a minor rebuild.

I really think there's no way there could be even compression across the board like that with a blown head gasket..... but if you'll do a head gasket for free, you can be my friend too :thumb:

Edit: Not that i think your an idiot or something :D but are you sure about the color of the smoke... I thought I was having white smoke but it was "bluish white" when I had my PCV bypass all screwed up very recently . . .

Thanx for the reply. It very well could be a blue white smoke. All i know is it is bad and my neighbor said it looks pure white. It started just doing it when i would start the car in the AM and then it would do it only when my foot of barly on the gas and when i let off the gas it stopped. But now it is just all the time. Nomatter if im idling or barly on the gas or WOT. All i know is that it really doesnt smell like burnt oil it kind of has a different smell to it.

So if i pull the turbo off and block the coolant and oil lines that run to the turbo and start the car as long as it doesnt dump smoke out of the turbo manifold that should give me a clear answer on the turbo right?

Also not that this matters but it has got so bad that by the time i get to the other end of a stop light from a dead stop i cant see any cars behind me..LOL.... man that would piss me off if i was them! :p

Chris

If you pull the coolant and oil lines offthe turbo and run it, your turbo will surely die real quick with no oil going thru it while you run it. if you are burning coolant you will know it! it really stinks not like just burning oil, if you are burning coolant you have a major problem with the centre cartridge for there is no seals with the coolant side in the turbo! they are just cast passages in the cartridge

Ya i was going to try and just bypass the coolant and oil lines and take the turbo off and then start the car and see if it would still blow smoke out of the turbo manifold. If it did i think it would be a good sign that the head gasket is gone. It just throws me that compression is pretty stable all the way across. I know the turbo needs to be rebuilt there is oil all in the intercooler and lines and maybe its just the oil seals in the turbo so bad that its going throught the exhaust?

Chris

i am in the EXACT same boat as you man. my new spyder blows a TON of white smoke idling and when im on the gas. if im cruising though with no Throttle like on the freeway its fine. i did a compression check also and i got 140 ecatly all across and im 7000 ft elevation so that sound pretty good. i took the snorkel off the inlet tothe turbo and there was oil just sitting there so im positive my turbo is bad but is it possible for an HG to be bad even with good compression numbers?

Oil in the intercooler and piping is a pretty sure sign that the turbo has had it. If
the head gasket was blown you would not be a good compression reading.

Just to answer your question, yes! BUT, you don't usually have the extreme indicators (like blowing tons of smoke or your crankcase filling up with antifreeze). Head gaskets can give you fits sometimes in trying to fix little things like misfires that are indiscriminate. Sometimes it is just the start of antifreeze leaking into your chamber. Also, overheating problems etc... These are unusual circumstances but they do happen.

Just because your comp. numbers look ok, doesnt rule out a BHG (as the supra guys call it...) Ive blown 2 head gaskets on 2 diff cars and both times the compression across all four cyl. was well within spec. However, if there is a large deviation between cylinders usually 15-20% then your problem is in the engine. Im not saying that your turbo isnt burning the coolant, but its not a very common problem to have a $%^* up center cartrige and not be burning a whole lot of oil at the same time. :dsm:
