Just got the car about a month ago, noticed the car started puffing out smoke, started white now its has a blueish tint. I checked my oil, no coolant, even had the oil changed and it seems fine. Checked the coolant, no oil in there. It first started after coming out of boost, but now I notice it when I just start the car and the cars idling.

Next test, I tried checking the shaft play, didnt seem like much, but I'm like loosing oil in the engine I checked in oil today and it was low. I'm also burning gas, I try to stay out of boost and what not. I spoke to a friend he said it seemed like the turbo was bad and I was burning the oil, I know blueish/white is oil, or I'm pretty sure. He said to pick a turbo up off of ebay and change the o2 while I do the turbo.

Anyone have an input, ideas, I don't know how to do a compression test or anything, any easy way for me to check this stuff?

And if I need a new turbo I figure I'm going to get a 16G. I found a few on ebay. Anyone have any recommendations, I'm kinda broke at the moment so cheaper is better.

Any input would be great, thank you.

From what ive heard around the forums and what i have learnd... sounds like your turbo is on its way out.. correct my if im wrong..... but also what i have heard is that in the Evo III 16 G's... there built two different ways i guess.. one is a GT and one is an MHI... the word that i have heard is that the GT's are cheaply built compared to the MHI...

Stay away from eBay turbo's. Your taking your chances with them. You would be better off buying a used 16g or something. As far as the smoke goes, the seals on your turbo are going out. Check your turbo for shaft play just to make sure though. As far as compression goes I wouldn't worry about it. But if you wanna check it, pull out the MPI fuse, wait for the car too cool down and pull the plugs out and screw in the compression tester. Crank the car over 4 times with the accelerator on the floor. Then move from cylinder to cylinder.

I was looking at an EvoIII on ebay, I've also heard to stay away from ebay turbos, I'm just not sure where to find a used turbo. If I get a 16G do I need a AFC or can I just put the turbo in for now?

Do NOT wait for the car to cool, you measure compression with the engine at operational temp. Crank the car until the gauge needle doesn't move anymore (might take more than 4 cranks).

I got in touch with the previous owner of the car and he said the smoke could just be from the car not being tuned/ air/fuel being off. He told me to adjust the top screw on the intercooler. He also told me if I wanted to put a 16G and a FMIC I'm looking at like 3G of work. He said new fuel injectors, AFC and Fuel pump. I would be getting an AFC with the 16G and the FMIC and a fuel pump hopefully before this.

I was looking to try and pick this up after I pay my CC bill. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/90-9...tegoryZ33742QQihZ014QQitemZ330043025236QQrdZ1. The other thing is for now I want him(PO) to give me the original BOV because he has a atmospheric one on now. I know when/if I upgrade the turbo I need the atmospheric right? Any input on that turbo and FMIC, suggestions, etc?

Okay so, yesterday my altenator went and today my water pump, I'm thinking the white smoke may have been from the water pump going, maybe leaking into one of the cylinders. I guess I'll find out after I change it.

400 some odd dollars later =/

I meant wait for the car too cool down so you don't take the threads out of the head when you pull the plugs. It will stay at operating temp. long after the head has cooled enough to safely pull the plugs. And your waterpump has nothing to do with your car smoking. No way you can get water into the cylinder from the waterpump going out.

What's this about a screw on the intercooler?

$3000 for a turbo you can get for less than $600 and a FMIC that you can get on ebay for less than $300? I guess maybe I'm not as good at math as I thought.

First thing's first: Ebay turbos are known to fail at a higher rate than true MHI (or other manufacturer) brands. Someone's going to chime in and say that their ebay 16g GT or similar has worked for them just fine for the past 1000 miles. That's great. But there are plenty of threads where the knock-off turbos have failed very quickly.

Second thing: You do not need a venting BOV when you upgrade turbos. The only time you should be venting your BOV is if you have the proper modifications to do so, and those are a MAFT in blow-through, a VPC, and/or a MAP set-up.

Long story short: Buy high-wear/high-stress parts from reputable vendors who support the DSM community, not ebay vendors who do not stand by their product. Don't vent your BOV until you know how to properly do so.

Okay. I'll look into a newer turbo from another place, and a different FMIC. I going to pick up the original BOV for the car. My problem now is deciding whether or not to do a rebuild.

My water pump died and I was told to change the timing belt, if thats the case then I'm going to redo the HG and other things. Should I just change the pump or start the rebuild?
