Whistling while accelerating.

damn... i thought there were dsm experts in this forum...

the whistling is what you call a "turbo muffler" and the way it works is that you have a cylindrical flat piece of metal towards the back of your muffler, and when you accelerate all the air that is being pushed out through the exhaust and muffler is being accumulated(all this meanwhile the cylindrical metal is placed upright and doesnt move), when the pressure is too much, the cylindrical piece gives way and the exhaust whistles because of all the air existing at a high velocity, and yes it sounds like the spoolin of a turbo. my gst has it but its uncommon for it to come on gst's, although it does put more emphasis on having a GS-T hahaha. the turbo muffler's usually come on RS's and some GS's. its not turbo, but its a turbo muffler, have fun tellin your friends u have turbo, they'lll eat it up. just make sure if you're gonna lie, tell them u dont have a blow off valve(for a sleeper), and oh, dont race, they'll figure it out. but it does scare off a lot of v8's. and dat comes from an rs or gs.

i wasted all dat time explainin what the whistling is from... and your gonna tell me its a LEAK????? God dammit, its the muffler! :dsm: :dsm: :dsm:

Yes, and for some it may be a leak...for those that do not have the "turbo exhaust"

i handt heard this whistle in my car until after i installed my stereo system then. i wnet out and drove it and when i accelerate it makes a whistiling noise. how can that be the muffler

so your suggesting its the stereo? oh yeah that makes more sense. maybe u bassed your car before and never realized it till after???

Ive heard of some people claiming that their cams can create the noise when spinning and give a "turbo sound" effect.....but I don't see how that'd really work, but it's something to consider?

Actually, it sounds very much like a turbo...in fact, I get that quite often. "Is that a turbo?" So maybe it is a good thing! Of course, it only SOUNDS like a turbo...
i have the same problem. it turns out that its the stock muffler that makes the whoo sounds,,,, it came like that when i bought the car it sounds like a turbo but its the muffler.

yes thats very odd but they're describing a sound that comes from the back of the car, not under the hood.

Wow, this is still going? I'll back up the possibility that it is more than likely an exhaust leak coming from or around the muffler causing the annoying whistle. Happened to me on my RS, and got louder over time. Took me a while to figure out where it was coming from since it would only happen under load (I couldn't really get out of my car while driving it to go look for the sound :p). But yeah, picked up a stock exhaust from a gst as a replacement (cheap fix) and slapped it on the RS and the whistle went bye bye.

i think thats great, that happens a lot here... once you here the blow off valve, u gain respect right away.

Coming from the rear?

Did you ever consider a gasket leak in the area where the muffler piping goes over the rear axle and bolts to the midpipe? It doesn't bolt to at the muffler. There's also a gasket there. If it's fallen apart or a bolt has come lose, I'm sure it'd make some kind of odd noise. You'd think it was the muffler, but upon inspection, it'd seem fine. The bolt up location is way up in there on the side of the axle closest to the front of the car.

Come on...you'd be able to see one of those whoosh wtf ever things in your exhaust...

The turbo type muffler sounds logical, and so would the exhaust leak. However I replaced my muffler with an after market one and its hard to believe that so many DSM owners would have the same noise producing exhaust leaks. Also mine only makes the noise between 55 and 70 mph over that or under there is no noise, and only while accelerating. any thoughts? :dsm:

Well, I have looked and I know for fact now that it is indeed a hole in the exhaust. The "flex-pipe" is all torn up, and has many different holes. I will replace it here at some point...it is all a matter of money.
