I have searched for this to see if I was the only one, but it seems that there are a lot of cases of this. What I was wondering is if whomever on here that has it or has had it, then how loud is it? Reason why I ask is because I have heard a few others and they are very faint, but mine is unbelievably loud. Does anybody else have an extremely loud one?

My car whistles pretty bad too. People are always asking if I have a Turbo! It's not turbocharged, but my exhaust does have some leaks and my exhaust manifold has a small hairline crack in it. During hard accellerations these "leaks" whistle like crazy! I'm saving up for a totally complete exhaust system (engine back) replacement to cure the whistling and the horrible "exhaust" smell coming into the passenger compartment.

You definately have a leak somewhere.

i have been told.. (by my dad whos a mechanic and built my engine) that its our timming belts making this noise. now if hes correct i dont know. but think about it, it gets louder as you accelerate faster, which is how the belts work.. faster you go, faster they go. and.. to test the theory, i had a leaky stearing pump (no not on purpose but it sounded cool) and the power steering fluid actuly acted as a lubercant for the belt and it went away. as soon as i fixed my leaky pump (with a small turn on the top bolt) the sound came back. so to me, his theory makes since. i dont think it has anything to do with exhaust. my stock one made the sound, and my header and downpipe make the same one. i hope i helped you and maybe it will make since...

Thanks.. :thumb: :dsm:

No I already know what it is and where it is coming from. I don't have any "cracks" or "leaks". I am seen and heard houndreds of exhaust leaks to know what one sounds like. It's also been checked out. Considering I can here it coming out the end of the tail pipe, I know its not my tb or a leak. Not anywhere else, just coming out the tail pipe. Its the muffler that comes on the 2G RS or GS car. I don't feel like going into detail about it. I wasn't wondering what caused it, just wondering if anybody else had an extremely loud one. Thanks though

LOL funny thing is, there are people out there now who are PAYING to have a little metal plate welded into their exhaust to make it whistle..... just think you all got it for free haha

Thats pritty damn funny. I remember when i had my first eclipse that every once in awhile when i accelerated it did whistle. I think after i replaced my water pump i never heard it again. thats y its been so long since i even remember hearing it. i use to always think it was my stereo until i rolled the window down and really heard it. LOL

oh wow.. thats horrible.. i cant believe anyone would want that.. EVER

I think that tip would slightly restrict airflow like from a 2.25 to a 1.25 exhaust. :thumbdown That guy was swerving all over the road and he is on camera so why did the cops not ticket him. They could have given him two tickets Reckless Driving and DWB Driving While Black j/k.
.
Now to add to the actual thread. My stock muffler did that and from what I have read it is a piece of baffling that corrodes and gets a hole in it which causes your whistle. I don't know for sure though.

I believe the whistle is a combination of things. My RS used to whistle really bad when I first got it, but when I replaced the muffler the whistle was gone- somewhat. Whenever I rev quickly, I get a slight whistle, sounds a bit like a BOV. Kinda cool. Depressing however, as there is in fact no turbo :( . However, I've done some investigating and I think it comes from the exhaust system as it only whistles on acceleration, and only above idle, so that would rule out the timing belt, as the belt would whistle at idle- also it is definetly an air type sound. I think it is from a crack in the manifold, warping or maybe a bad gasket. Whatever the case, after replacing the muffler the sound pretty much is gone, only on occasion do I get a "turbosqueak" as I call it, but I can control it somewhat so I can show off right before I get my ass handed to me. Good luck.

Mine does it. The sound is constantly changing pitch and sounds more like a loose air hose with a whistle on the end. I am getting a catback soon though, so maybe it'll stop.

Your muffler bearings could be going bad:) , or maybe there is a rust hole in one of the baffles inside of the muffler causeing it to whistle.

Mine was the resonators

I had just a muffler on my talon for a while, then had a custom bent exhaust bent up with just a cat and muffler. the whistle was gone after that. still just a cat-back with the stock cat.

those stock resonators hiss horribly, i could hear it inside the car, with the windows up and it was coming out of the tail pipe... man that was bad.

when i had my N/T and it started doing this i though no big deal until I almost wrecked my car after my catalytic converter almost lodged into the floorboard... you need to get it fixed immediately... :thumbdown

yea mine seems to do it as well.....i can hear it start to "spool" well whistle at about 3500rpm and it gets to a loud whistle abou 4500rpm...the bad thing is that there is a 91 mr2 in town..and it sound like im "spoolin" louder than him.. :thumb: I have a leak on my flex pipe, but that only makes it a little louder and thats really about it...the whistle comes from the exhaust pipe...I think if you replace the cat. converter with a hi flow and replace the muffler you will be cool..i just think its restricting airflow and thats whats makin the whistling sound.... :thumb:

peace :rocks:

izlude

izlude u described it perfect it sounds just like a turbo spoolin up
but in my case it seems to be comming from under the hood
as long as its not detrimentel to my engine i think it sounds kinda cool
does seem to impress the local HS kids tho

I had a whistling exhaust too, and I read it was the muffler, so I put a gst muffler on instead. After this the whistling noise was still there. A couple weeks ago I installed a ssautochrome header on my car and now the whistle is gone. I believe it just came from my flex pipe, but I may be wrong.

I didnt have the whistling sound come from my exhaust, its my intake that makes the whistling sound my my car and how you were describing it it sounds the exact same. My exhaust is brand new and its not leaking anywhere i checked, so i did some checking and pin pointed it down the to the intake, so that might be were yours is comming from too.

noticed something biut my whistle it only happens during acceleration
i can rev all day standing still and it never happens

wow i thought i was the only one that had the mysterious whistle sound... about 3 months into owning my car it developed this whistle sound that would start at like 3500rpms and go to like 6000. I never bothered to fix it becuase it had such a resemblance to a turbo spooling. I actually had several people that wouldn't even race becuase with whistle was so definate, it was just missing the blow off... last month i got full exhaust and my "fake turbo" disappeared... the problem ended up being two small cracks in my stock exhaust manifold that for some reason created a whistling sound. :dsm:
