Hey everyone, Im in the final stages of putting my engine together and was wondering what timing belt to go with. I use to have a mitsu belt on my car, but I was wondering if anyone has used a kevlar timing belt. Which should I go with? Gates, Gatorback, Mitsubishi or a kevlar timing belt? I dont want the belt to break a few thousand miles down the road so im trying to find the best belt I can. I know they are all good belts, but im "overprotective" of my investments in my car and dont want to take any chances.

Ok, with all that said, I went out and got a $20 Autozone belt. I inspected it for imperfections before I purchased. Is that a good idea or not? Damn..its a Gatorback!!! Im returning it. Guess im gonna have to order the $60+ timing belt online

For those people like Turbo Talon DL, this is the one place where you CANNOT skimp. Turbo Talon DL was a smart lad and took his belt back.

Let's do some math, $20 for a gatorback, $60 for a mitsu. $60-$20=$40. You're betting $40 dollars against $1000+ that you're going to spend to fix your engine when the garbage belt snaps. There's lots of gamblers out there, but I prefer to do mine in the casino.

As for the topic at hand, I bought Mitsu because I haven't seen a kevlar belt before, and didn't look that much into it. Most people on here are going to tell you to go OEM, but I think those people feed off of eachother. I'm not going to give you an "opinion" on the kevlar belts because I can't base it upon anything.

Good luck.

never had a problem with an oem belt

had some non oem belt and the teeth flew off of it 3 minutes after installing it (theres a thread wayyyy back where i had pics and stuff. destroyed a fully rebuilt head and block, and killed a BRAND new big16g turbo that had never seen boost yet. (valve stem fell in there)

will only go with oem now

I didnt know what brand of belt it was when i purchased. I just took it out of the box, looked at it, and paid for it. I started my last post here before i went to garage to look at the belt. Its going back asap...return to sender status

Had gatorback and it sucked... Balance shaft belt snapped in half and timing belt was cracking... Just did my maintenance and saw the outcome of 50K miles... I went OEM all the way and that would be the best thing to do... And the car performs alot better...

Had a gatorback that lasted 30k miles.... and of course, some of us ROFL just don't stop at a $1000 rebuild... I stopped counting after $5k and 2 other turbochargers LOL

where can u get the oem timeing belt at because i am going to be rebuilding my motor and i got one of the gator back timing belt and i dont want to use it if it is just going to breake on me. i cant afford to replace the motor again. please send me a private messege or email me at [email protected] :dsm

....."I feel your pain" :shhh: It's a bit embarrassing to friends/family/coworkers until the point where it turns into a hobby (aka: "spouse relief" LOL) and the car goes from fun daily driver to PITA race-only garage queen.

....all because a cheap timing belt broke :barf:

yeah i have the power enterprise belt unfortunately i haven't started the engine yet. BUt it "looks"sweet being all blue and all. i paid liek 150 from slowboy racing and that said that its a great investment to buy into. :thumb: :thumb:

Get the Power Enterprise , they are 4x times as strong than the OEM belt . That's what i am using , so do u want to spend $150 or over a $1500 for a engine . Just get the Power Enterprise , you will feel much more secure !!!!!!!

Im actually rebuilding an engine now for my 93 tsi and was looking into these new belts that are supposed to be stronger. There doesnt seem to be a whole lot of people running them though. Still considering it, might go with one of them by the time i have the engine together. iv had too many timing belt problems in the past, i dont want to have to worry as much all the time ROFL

Im using a kevlar and this thing is as hogh quality as it gets. edo has them at a lower price than anyone else.
