Which coilover setup?

I want to lower my car and stiffen things up and was looking at the megan street coilovers. I have another option of gc springs and illumina shocks. I like that the megans have camber adjustment built in and that will save me some money. The gc/illumina setup will be cheaper though since it is used. What would you guys recommend?

I've got the Megan racing coilovers on my 2g gsx right now and I love them. The only issue I had is the front two went bad on me. They were on the car when i bought it so not too sure how many miles but I just had Feal Suspension rebuild them now there good as new. the over a great range of adjust-ability and the ride quality isn't too bad. I've also heard that if you put swift springs on them it makes them handle a lot better too. I would recommend their coilovers to anyone based off of what I have experienced with them.

i bought some k-sport coilovers that are 32 way adjustable, which i like them alot they were easy to adjust. they were only 900 bucks and the pro style that they have got the camber adjustments built in. not sure what others think of k-sport but for me the price was good and they still hold up 2 years later.

I know the Megan 1g coilovers have the camber adjustment however, my Megan EZstreets on my spyder do not.. I've DD'd my spyder two summers on these coilovers so far and I love them! Its a little stiff of a ride but Im low enough to where if they are any looser Id rub like crazy up front. I have the rear fenders rolled just a bit. I love my ride height. I cannot get any lower in the front but the rear still has some more room. Id suggest you take a look in here!! http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/appearance-interior-exterior/390469-official-post-your-suspension-setup-thread.html

Again, the adjustable camber is not available for any 2g suspension. Not sure if you were looking at 1g suspension or they used generic pictures for the 2g stuff.

Thanks guys. Does anyone have an opinion on the gc/illumina setup? If I go this route, I'm assuming I would do the lowes camber kit in the rear and the Ingalls in the front? (is a front camber kit necessary?)

You want as much camber as you can get in the front on a 2G

K sports/Megans suck all kinds of ass. Body length is too long and when you lower the car, you get a grand total of about 3" of travel before banging on the bump stops. The shocks have basically rebound, and are way over sprung for the valving, so when you're driving over 70 on the highway and hit a bump, you're going to bounce like a ghetto Civic with cut springs.

Get a set of Konis and some springs. Hell, I'd even go Tokiko Blues and Eibachs over crappy eBay coilovers, although Tokiko shocks kind of aren't that great.

If you've never ridden in a car that has better coilovers, you'll probably think ebay coilovers are "racy".

I would look into a set of these

You can call and talk to the guys at English Racing if you want to hear real live reviews from guys that know what they are talking about. These coilovers are awesome. I have ridden in quite a few cars with these and installed a set. They are a magnificent piece. Just something to consider.

I have the Megan racing coil overs. And I love them. I have them for a 2g and I can tell you they don't have the camber adjustment option. I can't complain I drive the car everywhere. They ride nice. And they are also good for spirited canyon driving too.

Go with whatever spring rate and ride height you want and pair it with Koni's. People will tell you that they have megans or K sports and that they ride good...trust me that's crap, unless hitting your head on the roof every time you hit a bump at high speed is comfortable then go ahead. My eibach pro and Koni setup rides 10 times better than my K sports did. The only issues is the springs are a little soft, especially in the rear.

^^^ This. Unless of course all the roads you drive on are perfectly maintained and smooth.

I am pulling my d2 coil overs off my car this winter and switching to a koni/GC setup so my car is drivable in the streets around here. I have seen the light and learned my lesson from "cheap" coil overs.

It's about time someone said this. It probably took so long because Cinder is tired if repeating the same info after the better part of a decade. LOL. But seriously, it has been stated in hundreds of old suspension threads and is rediscovered by members everyday: Cheap coilovers are crap. For under $1k, springs/shocks almost always outperform similar priced coilovers.

So like others are saying, go with a good spring and shock kit. The Koni/GC is a popular and well performing option. I personally just installed the Tokico HPK kit which (even though they are far from AutoX worthy) handle and ride pretty well, even with 18x8 rims amplifying every crack and pothole. So I could only imagine how nice the Illuminas would be with a GC kit. Regardless, a good shock/spring combo is the best route. Unless your heavy into AutoX and are willing to pay $2000 for an entry level setup.

You have probably never have ridden in a car with "real" coilovers.

Would ground control springs that are specifically for illumina also work for koni yellow's? Is the only difference the spring rates?

I've never herd of a spring specifically made for a strut so if you have ground control springs they will work with yellows which that combo is better then most $1500 coilover out there for about $900 if you shop around.

There are springs specifically designed for certain struts, e.g., ProKits for Evo Xs are designed for the MR's Bilsteins, not the GSR's KYBs, but that's a tad off-point. More relevant is the fact that Koni Sports for the front of a 2G can handle 850# springs, while my prediction is that those springs would blow an Illumina in less than 500 miles.
