Hawkesbury,
What's the best place to order parts online when you live in Canada?
Any good web site, where you can find lots of stuff.
I have searched but their's not alot of threads, not too recent either and some links don't seem to work anymore.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:thumb:

Honestly dude....nowhere. And trust me, I've done my research, and i've been modding 2 talons since 2001...
...your best best is to order from the U.S. (and even when the US dollar was higher, it was still cheaper to order from the states...even after shipping and paying the ridiculous brokerage/duty fees they charge us up here...and its a bonus if you can negotiate with the retailer to lower the declared value of the item(s), so you dont get shocked with additional surcharges before they'll release the pkge to you

The market..the whole scene up here is nowhere near the level it is in the states...they've been modding and racing cars for decades, whereas we finally woke up in the last 15 yrs or so and decided we like cars too  .....and because we only woke up from our "love for cars" coma just recently, I find Cdn retailers mark everything up...
....I can give 100's of examples of VAST price differences between Cdn prices and US, but I dont wanna offend anybody :p
...if you want, pm me, I can give you specific comparisons...of who quoted me what, and where and how much I actually ended up paying

Basically whatever item your looking for, you gotta do your homework. Dont get me wrong, there are instances where its just not feasible to order abroad, and its either better, cheaper, or just works out the same to purchase locally...
...Gotta do your homework!

As far as buying things in Canada, Ziggy at RTM (mentioned above) is where I'd go. We don't have alot of options & most of the places up here that do sell automotive parts are redicusiously over priced. Check the vendors out for this site, most will ship to Canada, no problem. Couple that I have delt with that were good are extremepsi, bonehead performance, forced performance, etc. Another shop that I've had good experiences with is Hybrid Connection.

Never heard of this RTM site, and I gotta admit, it got my interest piqued....

....so decided to compare prices for a couple items that are on my list as the next immediate mods (aem ems and aem uego wideband)

Here goes:

RTM:

AEM EMS $1489 + taxes +shipping +3.5% (a charge he adds if you use cc or paypal )
AEM Wideband $269 +taxes +shipping and of course 3.5%

Prices according to sourcing them elsewhere (US):

AEM EMS $1475 + shipping (approx $19) from ExtremePsi
AEM Wideband $247 shipped!! from jksmotorsports

Point is, at least 90% of the time, or more, its cheaper to order via the US...HANDS DOWN!
....but hey, its your money...im in absolutely no position to tell you how to spend it...

Im just pissed that Cdn retailers mark everything up and turn a fun hobby into an un-necessarily expensive one...
....want more proof? PM me....i'd be more than happy to flaunt my point...

Actually noticed that a couple of you guys here are fellow Ontarians.....just curious what shop(s) you guys go to?
....I'm looking for a good shop to "complete" the car...need one or two things done...but my main concern is a tune...

...Neetronics any good?

Whats your guys' take?

Thnx

Hi i am new to the scene, but I am looking for some performance shops as well. Also any meetins or anything taking place, here in GTA area? I couldnt sign up to the Canadian DSM site for some reason, its bs. but whatever. I love this site way more anyways. Let me know guys.

Some shops will do a pretty good job at matching or even beating us prices, on things like tires or rims and what not, even my carbon hood was cheaper up here. However for dsm specific stuff you're not going to find much up here. Support the vendors and contact them for your specific order, some will work with you, and ship USPS

USPS =(No brokerage, you pay tax when it arrives, but costs more to ship bigger items)

If they declare the package lower for UPS it won't be insured for the value of the package should something happen.

If you ship a UPS package express you don't pay duties, again only tax when it arrives, on the claimed value, it costs more to ship this way, but you also get your package in a couple days.

On a 150$ package you'll pay roughly 50bux in duties/brokerages using regular UPS ground, however if you pay $45ish to upgrade to express shipping, your paying roughly the same amount in the end, but you don't pay anything more then tax on 150 when it gets here, and you get your package in a couple days rather then a couple weeks..

I've had several 800$ orders on car and bike parts, claimed as 130-150$ packages, and haven't had any trouble, but remember, lost or damaged = your out money on the insurance coverage..

Writing NAFTA on the comments box on some packages help to avoid some fee's, however I'm just learning of this one and not sure to what extent it works. Warranty claims are also viewed as another class.. And if you must claim something lower, don't just make it 150$, make it like $146.29, so it seems like a real total..

I've not used purolator or fedex so I can't comment on them.

And it's a pretty stupid comment to say we only started modding cars 15 yrs ago.. We have 1/10th the population and california alone sells more cars then all of canada, of course theres going to be more business down there

"USPS =(No brokerage, you pay tax when it arrives, but costs more to ship bigger items)"

Really? I've had plenty of shipments arrive via USPS right to my door without additional fees AND/OR taxes. Always. And USPS wont ship bigger items due to their size/weight restriction. Its actually beneficial to have stuff sent via USPS, because you wont get surprise fees when the item arrives. The only downfall is no tracking # and takes longer...

"If they declare the package lower for UPS it won't be insured for the value of the package should something happen."

This is true...agreed. Thats the only risk you take (and only worth it if the savings are substantial). But unlike postal services, missing/lost packages are far and between...

"If you ship a UPS package express you don't pay duties, again only tax when it arrives, on the claimed value, it costs more to ship this way, but you also get your package in a couple days."

Truth is, it costs A LOT more having something sent to you via worldwide express. Having anything sent this way from the states nulifies any savings you might have had anyway.

"On a 150$ package you'll pay roughly 50bux in duties/brokerages using regular UPS ground, however if you pay $45ish to upgrade to express shipping, your paying roughly the same amount in the end, but you don't pay anything more then tax on 150 when it gets here, and you get your package in a couple days rather then a couple weeks.."

Thats why you lower the declared value. And how can you speculate it would cost 45ish to upgrade to express?? What item are we talking about here? A $150 item that weighs 3lbs....or one that weighs 80?? Dont assume what will cost what, without at least providing a specific example. And besides, different vendors charge different shipping amounts, ON THE SAME EXACT ITEM....Ever seen some of the ridiculous shipping costs on ebay?!! That should piss anybody off!

"I've had several 800$ orders on car and bike parts, claimed as 130-150$ packages, and haven't had any trouble, but remember, lost or damaged = your out money on the insurance coverage.."

I too have never had any issues...and actually took a risk once and had a complete set of kyb shocks sent to me declared at $18 value!! Anything shipped $20<, yeilds absolutely no fees, which coupled with the cheaper US vendors=great savings.
IMHO, and from all my experience ordering abroad over the last decade or so, it is so well worth the "risk" your talking about.

"Writing NAFTA on the comments box on some packages help to avoid some fee's, however I'm just learning of this one and not sure to what extent it works. Warranty claims are also viewed as another class.. And if you must claim something lower, don't just make it 150$, make it like $146.29, so it seems like a real total.. "

I didnt know about the NAFTA thing, but I do know that you can negotiate with UPS if you feel the additional fees are just too high for a "simple" package. Again, doesnt happen all the time...every case is different.
Warranty claims are a great way to have stuff sent without incurring any additional fees

"I've not used purolator or fedex so I can't comment on them."

They bill you the duties later...but at least they're not rapists like ups...

"And it's a pretty stupid comment to say we only started modding cars 15 yrs ago.. We have 1/10th the population and california alone sells more cars then all of canada, of course theres going to be more business down there"

~sigh~ No need to get all patriotic there stephen harper. The truth is, we only did get into the scene not that long ago. But thats not the point...And Im not gonna sit here and discuss the correlation between number of inhabitants and land size....who cares!
My point...and the truth...is that items here ARE marked up...
...where do you think your precious cdn vendors get their stuff from? Nunavut?? ROFL
...cmon...use some common sense. They get most (if not all) of their stuff from across the border also...and because they're a retailer, they have to mark it up. And thats fine (economics principal)....but they're mark-up is ridiculously high..so high in fact that it ruins the scene! Why order thru them when you can go directly to the source?

Besides, my point on this topic is based on my personal experiences only. And i've compared prices with online vendors across canada, as well as all the major retailers and performance shops.
Again, reiterating my point from previous posts, you just have to do your homework. Yes there will be times stuff is cheaper up here, im not denying that, in fact ive purchased up here too....

....Im done with this thread :notgood:

As stated Ziggy is your best bet for most things. As for the things you have to get from the states its either lower the declared value or bite the bullet on the Duty.

I remember when I bought my FP2x's the UPS man knocked on the door and asked for $216 in fee's.

Just email Ziggy and ask him the prices. Most dsmer's especially in southern Ontario perform the labour themselves. If you join club dsm you will benefit a lot. People sell used/ new parts for really good prices. Moreover, their are many people over there that know a lot about dsm's. Myself and Daren_p or on that forum board as well.

Thank you guys,
I contacted Ziggy and he does have great prices.:thumb:
I will order from him from now on.:rocks:
