Ever since I bought my 2g AWD a year ago, the fuel gauge has never worked. Its always been buried below E. Today, i finally got sick of it and decided to see what the problem is.

I started by grounding out the yellow and black wire on BOTH sending units....gauge starts to move towards the full mark. Now I know my gauge and wiring are good, so I pull the fuel pump assembly out, expecting to find a broken wire or a bent hanger. What i found was NOTHING. The PO completly removed the fuel level float. So my questions are

1) Can I use a float from a FWD? I know the hanger assemblys are different, so I am assuming NO.

2. Is there any possible way to make the gauge read JUST off the drivers side sending unit (the float is still in that one).

This problem is annoying, and cheapest I could find a USED assembly was 200$. STM wants 500 for a new OEM fuel pump assembly....and for 500$, id rather live without a fuel gauge.

Don't know without comparing side to side and whether it will attach to the AWD unit properly. I know the whole FWD unit has a different hanger, plug, and sender resistance (double) than the AWD one.

Possibly by jumpering the passenger side one out (wire the yellow-black wire (pin 5) to black (pin 6) on it's connector). However then your gauge will always read between half full and full - where half full indication is really tank empty and full is tank full (at least on that side until it settles). Also will read worse on cornering than it did when new. Replacing it with another passenger one is the better option though. [Note that passenger and driver ones are different (different hanger, thermistor, plug - but the sender has the same resistance).]
