I'm pretty sure I have a problem. While I had my car up on the lift, I noticed when we turned my crank by hand, the wheels turn. We took it off the lift and rolled it backwards a little, and the crank turned.

Now the motor doesn't run yet, we are waiting on a new set of bearings to put in since the #4 decided to touch the crank while trying to start it up after a rebuild.

Is this a problem, and if so, what could the issue be?

are you shure that your shifting linkage is properly working and that its not actually stuck in gear my 1990 gs-t did that once untill i ajusted the linkage from the installation of the new oem shifter cables.

Even in neutral, although the gears aaren't locked together, there's friction between surfaces that touch from the input shaft to the diff and the film of lube on the gears has enough surface tension to make the wheels spin on a set of jack stands if you start the car in neutral, so it's only right to figure it can work the other way around (now if it can crank the pison through a complete cycle something's wrong.. even with the engine running and tires spinning you can stop them pretty easy with a broom, boot, hand (don't recomend the hand for those first tiemrs)

So if we roll the car backwards, and it rolls enough to turn the crank all the way around, there is something wrong?

I'll have to check the linkage.

Yes, if you're in neutral the engine and tires will turn together due to surface tension of the lube abd friction of the moving parts, BUT that should easily be able to be over come by hand, if it will turn the engine a complete cycle then something is way off if thelinkage is set to neatral

Thanks guys, I'll check the linkage and report back.

The linkage turned out to be fine, so we are going to pull the trans and see if we can find anything else.

Any other ideas on what it could be?
