Wheels: 24lbs is that alot?

You may just be the first to try it. Point was the 19" tire may weigh more or as much as the stock 16". So the weight saving over stock on the rim alone is irrelevant.

[edit] I wasn't serious about using Helium. Don't try it.

I thought all the big wheel bashing was cleared up in that post about 19s a while back. It was basically, "do whatever u want." I have 18x8s with 225/40zr18s. No problems and the roads in NC are pretty shitty. As far as the mass goes and talking about filling with air, a 17" tire is going to be taller, therefore it will hold more air. It also has more tire, which will weigh more. That's my theory anyway. I'm no expert on the properties of air in a tire, nor do I really give a damn to ever be. :p

I just really think wheel size is preference. I personally would never run a 19" wheel unless it was forged and had a fairly nice sidewall. 35 series gets scary in my book. 40s are a pretty meaty tire though and should be fine for reliability. There isn't going to be any real strain on the drivetrain if you run 40s on 18s. It's going to be VERY close to the diameter of the stock wheel/tire setup. If it's a lighter wheel than stock, WTF is the problem besides someone saying to get a smaller wheel? The only REAL factor is that they prefer 17s or whatever the case may be for not liking big wheels. We can beat this into the ground, but I don't even see a valid argument here. If it really bothers you, call a reputable wheel/tire shop and ask them. :dsm:

Thanks for rehashing everything that has already been said in this thread.

Right. 9 out of 10 will tell you to buy whatever is more expensive. *cha-ching*

I would never ask any vendor on what products to buy. How naive can you be? Vendors are in business to make money not for charity. Their first and foremost goal is to sell products and make money. 18s cost more for the wheel and the tire, of course a wheel vendor is going to say get the 18s. There are exceptions of course. A performance oriented shop like RRE will probably give you their honest opnion.

I would only ask vendor questions on product specs and pricing. Beyond that, it's up to you the consumer to do your own homework and figure out what's best for you.

It's preference? No kidding? How many times did I say "it's yoru car, do what you like"? I made the point to repeat that over and over for a reason... at the same time point out the pro's and con's.

Obvious 18s would be great if they are light and strong, and the car is driven on smooth nicely paved and maintained roads. I speak from my own experience and I will never go over +1 sizing ever again. Whether anyone reading my posts should heed my advice is their choice. I am merely providing information to help them in their decision making process.

I never said 18s are too big. Read before you post.

You didn't say 18s were too big... but it was implied with all the glorification you gave to 17s. The guy asked if 24lbs was a lot. For 18s, I really don't think it is. THAT was basically my point. The guy has clearly made his mind up and just asked a question about the rims he was looking at... and I don't think he asked if 17s would be a better size. Since you wanna get into post analysis now, I thought I'd bring that up. I'm not trying to be an ass. I just know from experience. It's a bi*** to ask a question and have someone glorify something that you don't even give a damn about. If you ask about 18s, you probably don't wanna hear someone lecture you on why 17s are better IN THEIR OPINION. It doesn't make a difference when you clearly have your eyes on a bigger wheel. I've stated my points and tried to answer the question. He can take your posts for what they are worth in the aspects of answering his question. And thank YOU for rehashing everything that has been said in this thread.

Well, I personally would not mind especially if I have little experience on the subject or am not fully aware of what I'm getting myself into.

Furthermore, he (not you) is the one asking the question, and is clearly not bothered by my input so your point is moot. I'm done arguing.

Like I have made perfectly clear in previous posts "it's your car, do what you like".

hehe, your willingness to answer my questions is definatly portrayed with thee efforts you both have put forth. Thank you very much

Chris :)

I have come to this conclusion. I will do my springs/struts first and drivearound on my 50's for a while. If the ride is good and the lesser side wall seem feesable I will go with the 18's. Till then I will not be making any rash decisions ;)
