well i dont know shait about subs. i wanted to get subs/amp but i dont want one of those big ass boxes that take up half my trunk. are there subs that work better w/small boxes or something?
what would help me out is if you could just tell me a good sub/amp set up for $400. thanks alot! :talon:

I usually find a HIGH power capacity woofer designed for small enclosures is best... Like 400-500w RMS. Then feed it some juice... If a single 12 get a DVC and wire it in parallel and run a low impedance high power amp bridged into 2ohms.. Obviously needs to be one designed for that.

one of these in a hatch corner box maybe.

Then maybe one of these.

Class D amps suck, unless all your looking for is LOUD. If I were putting a small sub (8 or 10) in a small sealed box, Id try to find a class AB. Much better acoustical reproduction (class D amps have signal to noise ratios of like 70bB :thumbdown), much cleaner, and better at hitting fast.

now if you had 2 15's in a bandpass or ported box, Class D all the way, lots of ouput with little draw! your not gonna notice any difference.

I don't know whos amps you are buying but even a low end amp like an interfire has a S/N rating of over 90db.

Yes class AB's are cleaner but save that expensive stuff to run some MB Quart or Boston seperates up front. For subs even sealed a good class D is fine.. Infact some are better because they have been designed with subs in mind... they build in a higher dampening factor.

Check out this MTX http://www.carsound.com/review_archive/amps/500d.html

Although somewhat less critical in a subwoofer application, A-weighted signal-to-noise measured better than -121 dB. You’d pretty much expect an amp designed to play from 200 Hz down to do well on an A-weighted noise measurement. The A-weighting filter places the most emphasis on the frequencies that our ears are most sensitive to, between 2 kHz and 3 kHz. One would hope that a class D amplifier would have very little output of any kind in this frequency range. Most of them are very quiet indeed, it’s just that the 500D manages to better the rest by a good 20 dB. Obviously, at these ultra-low noise levels, that extra 20 dB isn’t going to cause an audible difference
