Wheel Weights (weight of wheels, not balancing) [Merged 2-8]

Just wanted to let you guys know that I've finally gotten to update the wheel weights database at www.wheelweights.net It was a long time coming, but it's all finished. I'll be doing frequent updates, so please email me with any additions or corrections.

I figured that the newbies may not have heard of the site. I started it back when I had my Galant GS.

i removed the stock 16's and replaced them the stock wheels from a 2000 eclipse, which are 15". 195/65r15. then i put my 17" wheels with 225/45r17 tires. well the 17's slow the car down a bit, but it handles so much better, and the opposite is true for the 15's. does anyone know about some reasonably priced 17's that weight less, or should i just put some 225 wide tires on some 16's to reduce the rotational mass? any tips and/or suggestions will be appreciated.

Anyone have a list of stock wheel weights? I'm looking into getting a wider wheel for better braking and hopefully acceleration. I heard weight is a huge deal so I'm curious what all the stock wheel weights are. Would atleast like to know the stock 99 GST wheel weight since that's what I have now. They are the chrome plated ones which might be a little heavier then the alloy. Thanks.

Why not get the widest tire you can fit on your current wheels?

If you have 17x7 with 215/50/17 tires on your car and go up to 235/45/17 tires on your current wheels (if they fit), it would be the same contact surface on the road if you have 17x8 wheels with 235/45/17 tires.

FYI - I am just trying to illustrate the tire sizes above. I do not know if 235/45/17s will fit on a 17x7" rim.

I don't think the car is going to handle very well at high speeds with doing that. My stocks are 16" and like 6 or 6.5 width I think

According to this write-up http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97471 many people are running 225 tires on stock 6" rims although the numbers suggest 215 tires. I don't see how handling at high speed would suffer. If anything, it would be better because of the wider tires.

link states "Excessive tire width results in tire sidewalls that are not well supported and flex more in turning. "

Tire size isn't suppose to be more than 70% of the width of the wheel for optimal performance. So to put a 235/45r17 tire on and it work well you'd need at least a 17 x7 wheel but ideally 17 x 7.5 or 17 x 8. Yes you can get the tire on the wheel but it just wont work well, at least for taking turns/autox/road racing.

i have 245/40's on a stock 17 inch 3rd gen gt wheel....it was a bi*** to get it mounted..i broke my tire machine at work.

few things....

1. the stock 16" alloys and chromies are 6" wide, not 6.5
2. the reason a 225 is not recommended for this wheel is because it will create excessive sidewall, thus decreasing the handling charactoristics of your vehicle( having the tire bubble around the wheel may help slightly in the straights, but think of ## rim sliding back and forth inside the tire while cornering)
3.235/45's will work just fine on a 7.5" wide wheel, and will actually increase cornering ability on an 8"
4. machv.com has a write up on this under thier wheels section, hope it proves to be helpful

here is a pic of 225-50-16 on a stock rim. While it did bubble out a little,It totally increased my handling over the stock 205's. I had cheapo's wynstars, kumhos, michellin pilot sports, and pirelli p7000 on the car.Needless to say the michellins were the best followed by the pirelli's.I would rather have them bubble out a little then have the stock 205's any day.my.02.
