So I posted earlier about a scratching/banging noise coming from my front wheel well. Turns out that I jacked up my car and found out that even with all the lugs tightened down good I could move the wheel left and right by about 1/4-1/2 of an inch and I Know this is not supposed to happen. I have a few videos of me moving the rotor back and forth and then moving it with the wheel secured on and also one of me driving while it is making the noise.

Here is a closer view with the wheel off moving the rotor.

Here is with the wheel on and the lugs tightened down all the way.

And here is what I hear every time I drive.

What do you guys think the problem is? Possibly my ball joint or something like that?

WHEEL BEARINGS!!! Replace them NOW.... Take care of that ASAP! !

While your down there check the lower ball joints for wear, It wont hurt to replace them and you will notice a difference in driving.

STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY

Then buy a new hub bearing assembly ($150 - $200) and replace it. I've done it before, the old bearing will take some "pursuasion" to come out. Blow torch and a BIG hammer with a 2x4 usually does the trick. Good luck.

PS: I wish everyone posted videos of their problems... makes the diagnosis so much easier. :thumb:

So Pretty much i need to pick up the wheel hub and wheel bearings and install them and I should be fine right? Also I noticed on my front right wheel there is a VERY very slight movement to it similiar to my front right. It is only like a millimeter if even of movement which i expect is normal. Should I just replace them both or leave the left one until later?

The wheel bearing comes inside the front hub. One whole assembly. If you have the time you just as well do both. I'm assuming you mean front left has a little movement like front right, not front right moves like front right? Does the left side have a howling noise or make excessive tire noise on that side? If so it may be time for a bearing on that side as well.

Ya I meant the left wheel LOL. But there is no squealing or knocking nothing like that. Like i said it is verrrrrry minimal movement and it only happens when i took off the wheel and pulled at the rotor it moved just a tiny bit. But I am going to order the wheel hub today and hopefully get it in a a day or 2 if they offer better shipping methods.

Yes stop driving i had the same problem on my talon, i took off the control arm and had them
pressed out and new bearings pressed in. While i was there i also had the lower ball
joints replaced.

Not to confuse the OP but 1st gens require the bearing to be pressed out where as 2Gs have a bolt in hub. And to the OP parts stores such as Advance and Auto Zone can probably have the bearing next day no extra charge.

Well the left one is on it's way out so in the spirit of "in for a penny, in for a pound" .. do both now. You'll just have to do the left one in a year anyway.

How badly do you guys think I should replace my lower ball joint from the front right side while I am there? Is it a big problem I will encounter again soon or will it be alright for a while? The reason I ask is because I need money for tires badly and I only am going to have a day to finish this replacement of the hub and I think I should have enough time to replace the ball joint but let me know if i should or not.

The ball joint (lower lateral control arm) is a completely separate issue and is a quick, easy, and inexpensive repair regardless of if you are already "in there." We can't evaluate it with the information we have. If it seems bad, replace it. If not, it can wait.

My car was doin something similar, but not so severe... I ended up gettin a used wheel hub and a junk yard for 60 bucks and my buddy put it in for me. Solved the problem after the install of the new/used wheel hub. Its a lots easier to replace the whole wheel hub rather then the bearings or so I have been told

4 got to mention if you do this yourself I had to go buy a "pickle fork" to serperate some things behind the tire like balljoints and such.

It's a 2g. The hub and bearings are a single unit.

And he does not need to separate ball joints to change a hub.
